Title: wanted - rock athlete TV series
Post by: crimp on February 01, 2013, 01:13:40 pm
Bit of a long shot this, but worth a punt.

Back in the day i recorded the complete series of a climbing programme i recall was on the BBC.

I am pretty sure it was called rock athlete, and was by Sid Perou.

It had fawcett on the cromlech, livesey on downhill racer, etc.

I don't believe it was ever commercially available, and interweb references are scant.

Does any UKBers have a copy of this TV series lurking about somewhere, and can either part with it, make me a copy, or loan it to me for me to copy and return. All expenses covered, naturally.

Thanks

The most pure breed of the lot goes straight up the rock face with no means of attachment except chalk on the fingertips.

Believe me, if you didn't see this last bunch, you should have. They're evolving. Their fingers are long and sensitive, like those of Vladimir Horowitz or certain species of climbing frog. Crouching in space, with fluttering fingertips they search the smooth rock for irregularities, like a blind man reading Keats. Sensitive toes propel them upwards. 'Oof! Aangh!' they say quietly. 'Harf! Ungh! Hoof!' Clearly they have left the English language far behind. The commentary, alas, was still stuck with it. Every climber was described as the most unique in creation. 'More than anyone else he has extended the frontiers of the sport.' But this was a programme so brilliantly photographed that not even dull talk could make it boring.

I'd also love to see this, particularly Ron on Lord.  Good copies exist as it was shown at Kendall a few years ago.  One for Steep Edge (http://www.steepedge.com/)?

Brian was trying to get all of this (and a lot of other material) from the BBC for SteepEdge but they were a nightmare to deal with, not being obstructive but they had no framework in place to get this stuff our of the archives and onto the web.  Don't know whether Cofe and Brian are planning to have another run....

It was f*cking brilliant. The Pete'n'Ron Show on Dream/Liberator in Cornwall too iirc, and Cubby & Murray Hamilton on summat 'ard in Glencoe. I tried googling around for it a while back, with no success.

I'd also love to see this, particularly Ron on Lord.

I did a coaching session with Toni Lamprecht last year, and he said his Welsh hit list is "Lord of ze Flies und Ze Qvarryman" (excuse cliche German accent parody)

Brilliant

it's not just me. It wasn't all a dream.

How can we scare up a copy to share?

Me and the dodger still quote it when we're climbing.

Come on arms do your stuff

was it hard Ron? Aye. It took 2 fags.

Funny how things stick with you. or does that just show it was a quality climbing item? I would love to see it again.

I watched one of these series once. Obviously, I didn't download it myself but was told that one of them was floating about on popular torrent websites.

My mate told me he searched for torrents of the Ron on Lord episode without success.

Post by: crimp on February 04, 2013, 02:05:40 am
There are a couple of clips from the series on you tube.

There's 40 seconds of Ron on lord, and 2 minutes of Pete livesey on downhill racer. Possibly more clips if you put the right search in.

So there's gotta be a copy floating about somewhere.

I have checked on the British film institute's website.

The series aired in 1980, and was 3 episodes:

new extremes
first ascent
in search of new summits.

The BFI don't have a copy in their library either.

Morning!

I've got copies of Ron Fawcett - Rock Athlete and The Fingertip Phenomenon; they're VHS rips so the quality's not great, but perfectly watchable.

Haven't got access to big enough online storage, but if anyone's in the Matlock area I'll stick 'em on disc for them.

Cheers all!

If they are ripped and < 2Gb each then stick them up on WeTransfer (https://www.wetransfer.com/) and link to them here.  You never know, someone might grab them and then make a torrent out of them.

Awesome! How big are they? There's lots of scope for hosting + sharing big files /vids freely on internet, sure the hivemind of ukb can think of something!

slackline, I thought wetransfer isn't any good at distributing files to lots of people and there already is a torrent, just a seedless one. I'd say bung it on youtube/vimeo, suspect the bbc thought police won't be too fussed

OK, so I've got:

Rock Athlete - 758Mb
Fingertip Phenomenon - 1.01Gb
Pushing The Limits - 852Mb

I'm at work and can't install anything on my computer, what's the best way to get these out?

Slackers, I'm happy to stick them on WeTransfer (Rock Athlete is uploading as I type), but if anyone's got a better idea, shout now!

there already is a torrent, just a seedless one.

Rather than fuck around trying to match check-sums (which is likely impossible anyway as the files will be fundamentally different) starting a fresh torrent would probably be useful.

I'm sure I had some other old climbing stuff, I'll have a dig about and post it if I do.

Would it be possible for anyone to put these on a DVD, or even VHS.

I don't have a computer, and only operate on a rather limited android phone

Or at least make them easily available on web, eg you tube.

I contacted person who put rock athlete clips on you tube this morning. They don't have access to them anymore.

Cheers

if anyone fancies writing a bit of info about who when etc the films were made/broadcast I'll stick the info on youtube
- or links to relevant info, of course
I feel a bit of a twat sticking them up without proper credits, but Ceebeebies and Skyrim users have been taking up most of the time on HAL9000 - leaving me to do my bits in a rush

Thanks

top marks to everyone involved. Top job.

Checked them on you tube, good quality too.

Can we also scare up the other 2 episodes of rock athlettv series as well from somewhere?

I shouldn't think anyone would want them taken down, it's not like they are commercially available, and i can't imagine the BBC rerunning it any time soon.

Cheers.

Ps thanks for the offer metalarms. I should be able to tape em myself now.

Quite. Was Lord really filmed in one take? I found the close-ups of Ron's face on the upper section, on a proper first ascent looking at a proper fall, considerably more intense than anything one sees in moden sport climbing films.

I did a double take when I saw Chris Gibb using a waist belay - I thought everyone was using sticht plates by 1979?

Found the casual solo of Vector in the other film pretty cool too.

No, I think he wrote in his recent biography that he climbed it some 20 times or so on the day of filming as they only had one camera (DISCLAIMER : I may be wrong!)

I thought it was filmed as-was for the FA but the camera ran out of film at he top so they had to go back a few months later to refilm the top section.  I think I read that in a Sid Perou interview/article.

They are really great. Very different to modern films but still really captivating. The waist belay on Lord of the Flies was a total double take for me too.

It's hilarious how he keeps calling his wife 'lass'. The voiceovers were a total throwback too. Reminded me of the Jim Jewell film which has one of my favourite quotes - the solo climber answers to no one!

I'm pretty sure that's the first time I've seen the entire film since 1980.  Like meeting an old girl-friend there is a worry that reality will be a disappointment compared with the memory.  Rock Athlete still scrubs up pretty well though doesn't she?

Pedants like me will point out the continuity errors.  The Autumn footage has duller lighting, Ron's hair is longer and the final boulder has gone. tc can probably tell the full tale of the latter's disappearance. I'm not sure about the waist versus sticht plate belay, both were in use at the time, but it's all from the autumn footage and the rope breaking banter is just a tiny bit forced.  A little Yorkshire competitive machismo perhaps?

Wonderful stuff, it put me off trying the route for years, too late now.

have to find some other time to watch them all as baby namnok's head was in the way

Chuffed that everyone's been enjoying the Ron stuff! As promised I've had a dig about to see if I've got any other old stuff and turned up a few:

Everest The Hard Way - mid 80s (ish) narrated and starring Chris Bonington
Lakeland Rock - mid 80s again
and something that I've just called Joe and Don on Cemetary Gates - obviously it's Brown and Whillans and from what I remember it was filmed just before Don died

I there's any interest in these I'll try and get them on Youtube or, failing that, stick them on WeTransfer again.

I see what you mean. Not much to do with rock or bouldering. One of the last of the big high publicity siege-style expedition circuses, and so already a bit anachronistic even in the late 70s. Etc etc.

But.

Check out Dog Scott's photo of sunset from the summit of Everest. Beautiful, you think first. But then: Sunset From The Summit Of Everest. Oh shit. What happens next? Scott/Haston highest bivvy ever survived etc. Gnarly enough.

There was a "crikey" and a "by 'eck".  May have tested the Beebs profanity filter back in '79.

Or maybe they were dubbed-in exclamations to emphasise just how Yorkshire Ron is.

Ron "Nevermind"

:) I thought he was going to do a couple of donuts in the campsite the way he came razzing in..

is there a Ron vid called Body Machine?

is it available anywhere?

seem to remember a short, amusing bit of it on Youtube

Yes. Features Ron on the route of the same name at the Tor and Geoff Birtles struggling up Right Unconquerable with the classic dialogue:

Geoff "I've run out of holds"

Ron "Nevermind"

I've got a copy on VHS I picked up through UKB freecycle. If someone in Sheffield has the time & skills to convert this into a more internet friendly version let me know and I'll work out a way of getting it to you.

Ron - "on the brownie one"
Geoff - "ohhh - there's nothing like a brownie"

as can be seen here....

Geoff Birtles climbs Right Unconquerable (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fOEEDUZrL0#)

Got the rest of it on me hard drive somewhere (the VHS is a bit chewed at the start).  No time to sort out anything today.  Will dig it out and upload the whole thing.

Techie question - its currently in .wmv format - 640x480 - 5500 kbps. 39mins long, 1.53 gig.

I have handbrake, so can convert to any format.

Is this worth doing, or should I just upload to Youtube as is ??

just whack it on to youtube as it is - their compression/conversion system will do a reasonable job

any further compression will only make it less good

if the picture is a bit washed out, you can use the youtube editing tool after you've uploaded it - just click the auto fix button or whatever it is called

Just a thought.

Collectively we seem to be putting together quite a library of not commercially available, old, great climbing videos.

Would it be a good idea to have like a library of all these video links on a new wiki page? All in one easy to access list.

Time to start learning how to write Wiki's then!  That is after all the beauty of Wiki's, they are editable by anyone with the inclination to do so.

An alternative if you have Google/YouTube account might be for you to make a playlist of the videos there and link to it.

Neither prevents the videos from being removed from YouTube though.

Since Everest and Lakeland are still available I'd better now put them up. I've tried to stick the Joe and Don one on Youtube, but it keeps rejecting it (never uploaded to youtube before...)

Can someone do it for me? It's here: http://we.tl/DieaF6AVIk (http://we.tl/DieaF6AVIk)

So - after 58 million hours of painfully slow upload, YouTube has failed it as it exceeds maximum video length.

 :wall:

It wants me to verify my account by inputting my mobile phone number.. another nice little data mining process by google.  Next they'll be asking for finger prints and identifiable birth marks. Ironically - they already probably have mobile number as I have an android phone, linked to google etc.

Ho Hum, try again.

Hi

More requests for classic old chuffing tv programs.

Televised first ascent of coronation street at cheddar

Old televised ascent of old man of hoy by a load of famous old climbers.

Remaining 2 episodes of sids masterpiece 80s rock athlete series.

Regarding the latter, i was wondering if anyone on here is active in caving? There may be a sid perou collector amongst the caving community, who is a completist collector who has a copy?

Cheers

ps id also be interested of any old footage of Dr stack, if any exists.

Body Machine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DI5u95gMObc#)

Quality is not brilliant I'm afraid as the VHS was a bit knackered to start with (cause it had been watched a million times over (especially the millstone sections... so so smooth

The arete solo at millstone edge is probably one of the nicest stylish pieces of climbing I've ever seen. Smoother than Pete livesey on downhill racer

 ;D

Quick recap and update:

To date, collective sterling work has added the following old climbing tv programmes added to you tube:

Don Whillans last climb
fingertip phenomenon
body machine
pushing the limits
rock athlete (1 episode)

A third party has contacted Sid Perou on our behalf to ask for access to the remaining 2 episodes of rock athlete (i am awaiting his response).

I am happy to collate all we have put up on YouTube, into a TV programmes links page on the wiki at some point (i am equally happy for someone to beat me to it).

Wanted list to date:

televised first ascent of coronation street
televised ascent of old man of hoy
climbing episodes of high 5

any other requests for old climbing tv programmes? Add them to the list.

Cheers

Ill get these on a torrent. Ill start with Rock Athlete. Really keen to see this again.

I grabbed this, but its stalled at 25.1%, presumably as you decided to remove it Adam?

Anyway, I've deleted it now that they're on line elsewhere for downloading/viewing.

viewer age stats for the Whillans vid

13–17 YEARS         1%
18–24 YEARS         4.4%
25–34 YEARS         10.7%
35–44 YEARS         20%
45–54 YEARS         41.3%
55–64 YEARS         19.7%
65+ YEARS             2.9%

this video has been watched mostly by fat male ex-climbers whilst drinking beer

that qualifies climbing as a mainstream sport worthy of widespread media coverage and sponsorship

which in turn means that it should be in the Olympics

Quote from: Some loon on UKC
Have to agree, any climbing magazine that starts with "Heading Outside, how to climb on rock" shows how pathetic and culturally moribund, and controlled by statist leftist social engineering, our society has become.

Only the copyright owner or an authorized representative can issue a copyright claim for their content on YouTube.

so - who is Chris Johnston - the copyright holder?

Clearly I'm not denying that copyright does not belong to me, it states at the end of the vid its RFV Eyam(Ron Fawcett Video?)

Thought it may possibly be Steep Edge peeps, but I dont think so.  Wondering if Ron actually minds it being on You Tube. Might ask him and see.  Can anyone PM me contact details.

@ JB -

Exactly - so I wanted to speak to Ron himself and find out who owns the copyright.  Cant make it down the works during office hours (and I saw him down there yesterday prior to getting this warning - doh)

So - two potential outcomes, Ron says he still has the copyright and doesn't give two hoots that its on You Tube, thus I can tell Chris Johnston to swivel - since according to You Tubes own conditions - only the CR holder can bring a claim.

Or

Ron says he sold the rights to RareClimbingVids.corp.us years ago, for whom Chris Johnston now works and I have to take it down off Youtube.

(OK - 3 outcomes)
Ron says he still has copyright and doesn't want it on YouTube and I take it down.

As before - can anyone PM Rons contact details (I could call in on him in Hathersage, know the street - just not the exact house number).
