I know I'm a long way from grit, but the contrast between tops off sunbathing weather at brean yesterday afternoon and a frosty start (in Bristol!) and numb fingers on the motorbike this morning was pretty striking.

I'm no caller, but even I know it isn't on yet.

BUT

Saw some geese flying around in a V on the way back from the cliff yesterday. Just saying.

It's been said before; those who get on the grit too early are simply missing the best of limestone season....

That said, it's a good time of year to build some skin with a bit of volume!

It's true that at least personally - yes, I've had the heating on. Yes I've worn my down jacket (but not the big / serious one).

Have I had to scrape ice off my windscreen in the morning yet though?

Still a little while to go by my reckoning. Given the outrageously hot summer I reckon the under/over line is later this year. Under/over 22nd October I reckon. 10/11 both sides.

The geese flying overhead just heralds the beginning of the slide to scrittle season.

I heard there is no such thing as optimal temperatures at Malham, it just flip flops from greenhouse to can't feel your extremities/gordale is frozen. Awaiting publication of nature paper on that front though.

I did consider writing something up about this - but couldn’t find the right (low) mix of impact factor and vaguely reputable journal (that would also be a soft touch...) :)

Shoot if you’ve any suggestions!!

geese don't mean much.

Hmm, depends what geese they are, and where you are. Down here, once the Pink-feet are on the move, and the dahlias are dead, its bouldering season.

Please do your homework, Huw.

I looked the geese in the eye as I drove past. They knew what's what. I'll get educated on my goose varieties in case of another encounter.

Irrelevant to the calling, but the cliff bats were having an ace time yesterday.

I was under the impression that it was just the excuses that flip flopped like that ;)
