If you like The Boys and Preacher I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis. As mentioned Kick Ass is excellent as are Wanted and American Jesus by Mark Millar.

I should give you about 1000 wad points for this recommendation. Preacher is the best comic I've ever read, by miles. It's also the most absorbing thing I've read in years.

does this mean that you own a copy? ... that you might be able to lend to me?

I'd go so far as to say Transmetropolitan is probably one of the best comic book series ever.
Was what got me back into comics in my early 20s

As for the boys I found that it was a bit of a one trick pony whose puerile humour wore off quite quickly but each to their own

Anyone got any ideas for a decent comic for an 8 year old?

I fancied getting him started from issue one and was thinking of the recently re-launched Guardians of the Galaxy, new film out in a few years etc.

If anyone has any other suggestions let me know, preferably one that isn't halfway through a story arc.

Thanks.

I finally got round to reading the first sandman book (yes I know :chair: what took me so long) Brilliant! I am very keen to read the rest now what a great start
gonna buy book two, three and four for my canada trip.

interesting (to me atleast) interview with neil here:
http://www.theguardian.com/books/2013/jul/26/neil-gaiman-sandman-author-profile

Any other recommendations of comics other than transmetropolitan (thats next after sandman). A little twisted not necessarily good always prevails or superhero.

After Sandman I would definitely be going for Lucifer next which is an excellent spin off of the character from the Sandman series (you should get to him soon). Other stuff I would recommend includes 100 Bullets, Ed Brubakers Criminal series (proper noir) and possibly DMZ (think this is more of a marmite suggestion than the others).

slightly off topic

thinking about buying a Nook HD+ for the kids to play with (9" screen, £129, microSD, Google Play)

the main attraction for me is as a comic reader

anything a boy should know about reading comics on a tablet that would influence his choice of tablet?

Most probably the formats it can read besides the native one. PDF  at the very least. Others(ePub?) could be a big plus.

Based on the comics people are reading here, you guys may want to take a look at Lone Wolf & Cub.

Published back in 1970, it's one of the first manga ever made. Unlike today's animated kiddy crap, Lone Wolf and Cub has a darker, Asian mythology type of vibe and is very much suitable for adults. There is a buddhist bent to it, oddly enough.

Because it's from a different era, the writing is also different, not at all like hollywood style  arcs but more primitive and brutal, and very japanese.

If you like Tarantino movies, if you like Westerns, if you like Kurosawa, you're guaranteed to like LW&C.

It is available "online", but the small, thick paper back books are well printed and worth their price.

I read comics on my nexus 7.
I have only ever got them from comixology so already in a nice format and good to read. (not as good as a comic though)

The clarity of the screen will be the key thing I guess. So probably resolution/number of pixels is probably worth checking

old nexus 7 was 216 pixel per inch which is fine for reading on
nook HD+ is 256 per inch
new nexus 7 is 323 per inch

I can (still) read comics on my Note 2.

Lots of comics are available in .cbz/.cbt format* and readers are available on all platforms.

I can't imagine format ever being a problem on anything vaguely new.

Lone Wolf and Cub is really really good, but stuff like Astro Boy predates it quite a bit.

The most curious Manga I own is probably the first volume of "onsaito" (Onsight)

Just read the Crossed 2013 Special. A bumper episode set in the Australian outback.

Really good. The crossed are actually a minor aside (or rather the backdrop) to the story which is a nice twist.

Haha! I haven't seen that one.... "Onsight" vol 1 is a typical shōjo bildungsroman. (<-japanese & german loanwords in the same sentence :dance1:). Girl discovers something to do with her life (normally martial art/cooking/ikebana whatever), in this case bouldering on a trip to Ogawayama, have to endure setbacks, win some friends, endure more setbacks, gain some wisdom, have some successes and so on...

Not that my Japanese is that hot, I mostly look at the pictures to be honest.

Fairly excited as the Last of the Grendel Omnibus' comes out at Christmas, such an awesome story arc covering many centuries, from the birth of a master criminal to the dying gasps of the civilisation it spawned. good pics too..

Other than that I've become strangely addicted to HellBoy...

I've just started watching the BBC's Neverwhere series (Neil Gaiman) - I was pleasantly surprised by the title sequences

they look very similar to the covers for The Sandman comics - which I like

unsurprisingly this is because they were also made by Dave McKean

Ah OK. Is it being repeated, or do you have it on DVD or something?

Saw this linked to on the Crossed message board:

A Scandinavian post apocolyptic web comic. Haven't read much yet but it's very nicely drawn.

following good advice on here I am currently working my way through sandman, transmetropolitan and hellblazer.
I am also reading locke and key which is a cool horror comic. Pretty good so far but not very far through the story.

My housemate thinks this will be good http://www.firstlawcomic.com/
He has read joe abercrombies fantasy novels and says hes a really good writer. The art work in the pages online look pretty good too. Probably worth looking out for it.

I have read 1 issue of chew which seemed an interesing story will probably try a few and see if i get into that

Any recommendations for my next book.
