Valerie Ann, I'm Desperate Dan
March 09, 2008, 10:08:51 pm
Hi, discovered a tidy little bouldering circuit in the woods above Black Rocks the other day with about a dozen problems on a bunch of natural boulders. Anyone out there know who developed it, as it looks brushed?

Is it at crag top level, set back a bit, 150-200m alng from the north end of the crag? Has a nice slab, a little low roof, a block shaped a bit like a horsehead? I used to boulder there with my brother when I'd just started climbing. At 8m from Alfreton it was my local crag. Shit, that'll make it 17 or 18 year back now! Did quite a few lines, maybe seven or eight. The only line I recall spotting but not getting up was the right arete of the slab (we were punters). I can't remember much more detail, but I did enjoy it at the time.

That sounds like it Jon. Horse Head Book-Ends. It's all coming back to me now. It's a right jumble, but with good rock.

Was the horses head on the lowest bit, with a big pocket on its left cheek?

Oh, and incidentally, the title of the thread came from a very well-carved bit of graffiti. Made me smile.

The Horse Head was facing west and was NW of the slab. Can't remember if it had a pockety cheek

West, north-west. God, does everybody have a built-in compass but me? What about up and down, left and right?

Was the horse looking down the valley?

The horse was looking across the valley, with his big blind rock eyes

This thread is brilliant. From the 3rd post it reads like early Pink Floyd lyrics

Fact gathering for a guidebook.

I hope by now you can see why Secret Uphill Gardner-style errors sneak in. Information wasn't stable after the horse's head was bolted.

And this is what the horse was seeing where my eyes couldn't look

That's what he told me anyway
