Soon no one will need to say what phones they have, we'll all know automatically from the really useful and informative signature Crapatalk adds to posts by default (but which can be turned off in the settings)

Well...  with a quick google at least - unless you know your phone as a E5823...

for those of you on Virgin sim only -

they are offering double data again (last day of the current offer is today), but you have to phone them to change to the deal

for Virgin media customers
£8 gets 2GB data (plus usual mins and texts)
£10 gets 4GB data

offer seems to come up fairly regularly

Update - After speaking to three different people and being on hold for ages it turns out Virgin won't actually transfer existing customers onto this double data thing, it's for new contracts only, so I'd have to cancel my existing one, start a new one too, they then send me a new SIMS that I don't want or need, then after the 30 days notice period had gone on my old number presumably get them to transfer the old number onto the new account. Or at least that's what I understood the women with the mid-pacific accent on the phone was trying to say. At which point I lost the will to live and hung up.

that's bollocks (what they said, not what Dave said)

I changed to it yesterday - both my sim only deal and my wife's

I called 789 from my phone and said "I want to change my sim only deal to the double data deal for the same price" and the man on the other end did the usual credit check and read out the conditions - my package updated to double data today, so I know it worked

no new sim or anything

we were both already on a rolling one month sim only deal

I might try again tonight, i'm guessing most of their callcentre drones don't know what's going on, probably got to drop lucky.

So far I'm very pleased with my reconditioned Z5 compact. As with most half decent android stuff, it works without much fanfare...you don;t get much feeling of "upgrade" except the lack of hang ups and slowdowns.

The camera is pretty decent:

Battery lasts me 2 full days, maybe a day and a half if using GPS in the hills or a lot of screen use.

I found it very slippery, so bought a slightly grippy cover:  http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/rearth-ringke-fusion-sony-xperia-z5-compact-case-smoke-black-p56858.htm

Cheers for the heads up.

Just go easy on the little bit you have to pull out to charge it up. The tether on the mrs's one wore out and then it fell out and she lost it.

They don't have that any more, that was a previous model, though are still magically waterproof.  Also have a Z5 compact and have been happy with it. Premium performance, but a bit smaller.  The stamina and ultra stamina modes are pretty useful, when running short/on a trip!  The ultra stamina mode effectively turns it into a non-smart phone, with a good camera, but the projected battery life is about a week!

Has anyone had problems with call quality on their Xperia Z5c? Mine has become effectively useless as a telephone as the other aller gets a terrible echo.

On the plus side, it turns out that the Z5c has a built in barometric sensor. They just didn't bother telling anyone...

I plumped for the Moto G4 and as I had John Lewis vouchers (after spending a fortune on stove) it came in at £130. It's massive (and thin which seems like a bad combination) but seems a big improvement on my 2nd gen Moto G.

Virgin are doing the double data ting again on SIMS only. Phoned this time and managed to get someone who wasn't an idiot so got my shit sorted quick smart. Quadrupled my existing data, 50% extra minutes, and a 4G sim in the post.

nice one - not sure we've got 4G devices, but will check

I just scored a 50mbs unlimited broadband only deal for my daughter's flat for £18/month with Virgin. Now to see if they'll let me take up some of their black friday media offers as an existing customer...

I quite often USB tether my laptop through my phone on EE 4G with no issues if that helps?

Thinking about it, with a sim only deal and an unlocked phone can they even restrict tethering?

Yes - they can tell when its tethered...

I'm on EE at the moment and they allow tethering... I also have a three sim that allows it but only for a portion of the data alllowabce.

There are various ways tethering can be detected.

On Virgin I've used my phone as a Wi-Fi hot-spot to allow iPad to connect to interweb via the phone's 3G before, if that counts as tethering.

That is tethering.
