Powerballs
June 12, 2007, 09:09:27 am
These.

Any thoughts on this wonderful little gyro-trainer?

A few months ago I used one for 10 mins each hand for a month or so; my pinch strength went through the roof.

Just taken receipt of a new one, @ 25€ inc. p&p it's a total bargain, addictive too.

Fun toys, but never noticed any strength benefit from them.

Be careful with your elbows if you're going to be using it daily. Just make sure to stretch after using it.

So, post up your record RPM. Outrageous claims will need photo/video evidence.  ;)

Post up your record RPM.

No can do: I jewed-out and went for the basic (without rev. counter) model.

Never noticed any strength benefit from them.

I have: when open-handing slopes with full bodyweight on the wrists.  My wrists have always been weak and fractionally dislocate on slopey terrain.  Since using the ball this phenomenon has ceased.

How can you be pyched or motivated for a game without numbers?!?!  You can get an RPM upgrade, probably about £8.

All psyche and motivation is replenished with a few rounds of strip-shithead with my better half, but like Nigel Benn, I never play strip-shithead before training.

Is it just me or is everyone else alright with this, especially as I can recall discussion on here of the use of sexist/homophobic language? Don't care if I get called out for 'political correctness' gone mad.

circa 12k is good for us climbing punters. The pro powerballers are up in the 15k's. I never broke 13k but then again it was only something I used in anger at work over the week my brother was there with his powerball.

I think the jewed out thing is a perfectly fine reference to the humour latent in South Park and mainly epitomised by Cartman. Social context...

No, I was about to pull him up on that.  I don't think it's cool and I'm surprised since Houdini has pulled people up on their use of homophobic language.

Having just looked up the meaning of Hakenkreuz I can assure you I'm neither assuming nor implying anything (let alone that), but I can't see any justification for the use of that language in this context.

I can: it's called humour, like taste, there's no accounting for it.

The meaning is unequivocal, and the attempt to shoulder this couplet to the Hate Crimes department is regrettable.

Care for these balls, Andy?

Well as they say 'the proof is in the pudding' so I just went and ordered one of these gadgets off eBay - will let you know how I get on!
Sounds like a fairly sound concept though!!

Can someone answer me one thing though - how does it work your shoulders and biceps as it claims on their site??

It's to do with the position of the arm as you rotate your wrist.  Different position use different muscles.

Thanks for the prompt and idiot proof answer as usual Houdini... and sorry for the stupid question...  :-[
What is the general concensus then - do they really work/benfit you for climbing??

That could be another stupid question too... 'suppose it depends on how you use it' kinda thing?!?!

Sorry, one last reply. Well, humour maybe a matter of taste but its also a matter of context. What's funny in South Park isn't necessarilly funny in the context of a thread about training aids. But this is a trivial distraction. Yes the meaning is unequivocal - because it taps straight into a deep vein of negative stereotypes of Jews. But, please be absolutely clear, I am not now and never intended to accuse you of 'hate crimes.' To imply that I did grossly and unfairly misrepresents my original intentions, which were not personal vilification but a disinterested debate on what this community does and does not find acceptable. I don't think you are a racist or anti-semite. To coin a phrase, I simply thought the use of that term 'regrettable' - nothing more.

Back on subject, someone did give me one of those things once but I couldn't get it to work. Probably too weak.

It's a coordination-thang.

That would explain it, coordination being my other great weakness (alongside weakness). Houdini, I've pm'd you

Aye, it took me a while to get the thing really going. Definitely a co-ordination thing. FWIW the last few times I have played with it I haven't bothered with the fiddly little bit of string, which got lost ages ago. Just give it a quick rub/roll on a carpet to get it moving. Don't get carpet burns on fingers though.

I've got one and recon it's pretty good for generally hand/finger strenght. The only tricky 'co-ordination' thing is getting it going, once its got some speed up, definately a strength thing mainly. You certainly feel like you've had a work out if you do it for 20min. I've done around 12k as well. That big beefy Greek guy only did 15k and he looked like he did it for about 8hrs a day.
