Proper Wad Ticks
November 15, 2006, 11:18:19 am
I was speaking to Gabe Regan on the phone last night, and it occurred to me what a tick that is. (Incidentally he was telling me his story of doing the FA of Velvet Silence, totally on sight, back in the day. Out there.)

Other proud ticks include meeting Jim Moran in a pub in Glossop, doing a route on Fair Head with Catherine Destivelle, sharing a cup of tea with Wanda Rikiewitz, having Peter Harding give me a couple of his ancient karabiners, but the ultimate, crowning tick of all time

I once said hello to Warren Harding, and he nodded back at me.

That's a good hand.

Shook hands with Alex Huber at Siurana.
Met Pedro Pons at Gandia.
Chatted with Simon Nadin and family at Olshoremore after watching from my surfboard  while he (dw) soloed some brick hard stuff.

Best I can offer, although I climbed with a few of the South African hardcore very old school in the past.

A certain diminutive gritstoner ran his hand up the inside of my thigh onetime with a "Just checking to see if you're alright with that..."

I lost the hooped-earing not long after...

I'm probably the Avid Merrion of climbing so still get excited about seeing stars at the crag even as a supposedly mature adult (any one else use the Power of Climbing as a tick list? No? Oh, ok) so when I was bouldering at the Tor once and Martin Atkinson asked me if I wanted to do a route I nearly cried into my trousers. I thought it was like having a kick around with George Best at Old Trafford.

Shared a belay with Catherine Destivel and Craig Smith belayed me on my hardest route (though I know him so that doesn't count). Various court orders prevent me getting to close to others!

Biggest wad tick would either be DWS in Spain with Julian Lines or getting up incredibly hungover and then finding the afore mentioned "diminutive gritstoner"  had crashed at ours for the night, had to be at Hathersage in 10 minutes for a course he was teaching but had no idea where he was or where he had left his car the night before. At least he didn't try and run his hand up my inner thigh - got away with that one.  ;D

Another Ronside Force-it tick...  and not actually mine to be honest.

A few years back I was up at Stanage bouldering one evening and my non-climbing (yet) girlfriend was sheltering from the elements in a sleeping bag (we were bivvying out that night) in a small alcove just round the corner from Hampers Hang (middle of the sloper traverse if I remember rightly).  A fella with real big hands traversed round the corner, looking really smooth (like he'd done it before to be fair) until my prone girlfriend, wrapped in sleeping bag and resting on essential footholds caused him to finish his traverse and walk round her.

Ron was almost apologetic for Caryl causing him to break up his traverse.
Caryl was oblivious to the aura and magnificence of Ron (and unaware of the faux pas of interupting a problem).
I was a bit tongue tied...  I'd finally met Ron and I was having to apologise for my girlfriend being in his way.  Not the introduction I would have hoped for.

Not much of a tick that - who hasn't been "encouraged" by that fine chappy??

Anyway, I once met famous climbing author "Niall Grimes" at some grotty quarry near Glasgow

Jim Moran followed me on JR (the route, not the person) and he fell off. Did an E1 down Dovedale with Isabelle Patissier. Introduced Ellie Cheveux to British climbing by taking him to Long Wall down the Dale (didn't in fact realize who he was till half way there, had simply been told to pick some Swiss geezer up from Ben P's house). But I still remember with awe the first time Ron nodded and said 'aye'.

Oh yeah, I once had a long conversation with Stevie Haston (he knew my mate that I was with), on the street in Chamonix, about the route Fidel Fiasco on the Aig Blatiere.  I'd just climbed it and was singing the joys of its wonderful upper pitches.  Haston too appeared to genuinely share my enthusiam for the route and waxed lyrical (as apparently does very well) about the thing.  Seemed a really nice bloke.

That's one way of putting it. You're right about Fidel Fiasco though, even if it isn't as good as the Brown/Whillans

Not Auchinstarrys in your eyes?

A wee lad asked me "Who do you support, Rangers?"

I said No

A look of terror crossed his face
"No Celtic, no?"

Good ticks there, although the first time i read it i thought it said @Jerry Moffatt sahred my Mum.@

Good ticks too, Andy.

Although i still think my Warren Harding nod trumphs all

The first time I saw Ron at the plantation I was spotting Justin Critchlow on Careless Torque.  Ron came over, nodded to us, then went up NTBTA to the top and reversed it to the ground.  As he put his trainers on Justin said: "Never mind Ron, you'll have that next go."  We started giggling and he walked off looking distinctly unimpressed. :-[

I was also once on the same ledge as Didier Raboutou. It's the fleeting little ones that feel more amazing. I have talked a lot with Marc le Menestrel, once went on a climbing trip with Ben, Jerry Malcolm, sean Myles, often climb with Boysen, interviewed Lynn Hill, but it's always the little ones that only last a moment that stick longer in the memory.

Ray Kay once gave me a lift when i was hitching!

I agree, Warren Harding is a massive one, don't think anyone will beat that.

My mate Mick Ryan shared a beer with Warren Harding and chatted to him for an hour or so.

Later Warren died and at his wake attended by Yvon Choiunard and Royal Robbins, at Roger Derryberry's place...Mick got thrown out for celebrating in the spirit of Harding.

He also told me about the time Tom Frost came round to Mick's house, brought him a set of his Sentinel nuts, they drank tea around the Viking table.
