Are you in Perth for the foreseeable future then Will? Got loads of mates based there, but they are mostly ex-climbers; seem to spend most of their time cycling and doing triathlons or being dragged face first through the water by large sails aka learning kitesurfing.

Thats probably because there is very little climbing in/around Perth as its on a coastal flood plane.

The boulders are ok, but each area I visited seemed quite small and they're very spread out along the Darling Scarp.  Theres a few scrappy granite quarries for routes around Perth, but the nearest decent climbing was in  Margaret River 3.5hrs drive away (great for food and wine down there too).  I also visited Mt Frankland (five hrs drive south) and Kalbarri (7hrs drive north) whilst living out there.  Albany looked food for sea-cliffs but never made it down.


Get out to Spring in the Valley when the vineyards all have parties, good fun day.

I think we will be here for at least two years. Helen's fellowship at the hospital runs until July 17 but we're on a four year visa. We're hoping to stay for a while.

There might not be a lot of route climbing around Perth but there is a lot of bouldering, and it's good bouldering as well. There are a number of different areas all within an hours drive from central Perth, and areas like Kalamunda, Winjan and Mt Randall are quite large, with a variety of grades up to V12.

Some of the problems I've seen/tried at Winjan and Kamikaze areas are 3***, there's a problem that was put up by Alan Pryce, it's called Body Swerve (V12) and it is without doubt one of the best looking problems I have seen, anywhere. I'm hoping to have a session or two on it before the summer arrives so I will try and get some footage/pics.

As well as the outdoor stuff there's a good wall scene, some strong folk knocking about.

I think that is what winds me up. He is unbelivabley priviliged even to be able to contemplate living in a yurt for a year in a beautiful swiss valley and developing his own personal bouldering spot. But instead of admitting he is lucky and enjoying it, he is trying to claim it is all in the name of an enviromental goal. This type of lifestyle is completely and utterly unfeasible for the vast majority of people. In fact i've seen arguments that suggest we should all be living in big cities since this is the most efficient way to provide everyone with their needs.

My brother put together a wee collection of problems from West Nab. Lovely spot for a summer evening. Plenty low grade stuff and a few harder quality lines. Archery in particular is a peach.
