Someone genuinely said, "Come on, post it!" in that video.

Plus the camera work is nauseating. But now I want to try really hard on something, so therefore not non-quality?

Climbs like a Willackers/John Dunne hybrid ;)

Can't decide if that's complimentary or insulting  :-\

Thanks, I think.

Thought I would try and do something a little different with footage from this years Rocklands trip so I put together this. Everything featured is new, not in the guide or a first ascent to avoid boring people with the same old classics (saving them for a boring classics vid). Also experimented with colour grading a little so any feedback is welcome.

Nice Ben. South African Railroad looks cool, is that on the boulder beyond Distance? Seems so long ago now [emoji22]

Hi b3n, what codec were you trying to grade the footage from? In my pretty limited experience it's hard to work with a h.264 codec and can end up looking a bit tinny and oversaturated. Those oranges in rocklands can look really orange if you see what I mean. I spent a bit of time trying to find something that works well and in the end depending on camera / memory filming in a pro res or similar codec with a flat profile and then trying to head towards something that looks as natural as possible while trying to resist the urge to pump up the saturation and crush the blacks (having done a lot of that in my vids)  - seems to produce the best results. The other thing is filming at the right time of day good use of depth of field and considering composition and cutaways from climbing footage can be a great way to make filming a bit more interesting. Probably a load of unsolicited advice (sorry!).

Cheers Dan, appreciate the feedback!

Im pretty clueless myself about most of this stuff, filming off a lx100 in 1080p mp4. The other video that I'm also currently editing i've used a much more toned down approach so will be interesting to hear what you prefer. Was persuaded by the opening shot (driving through the valley) that the video may suit a more pumped up approach but there's definitely some shots where i struggled to make it look natural enough. Filming in a flat profile is definitely something I will do in the future, noticed it makes life a ton easier! Time of day also (although unfortunately im always going to go when it's best to climb rather than when it's best to film), maybe I'll invest in a reflector so climbing in the shade isnt such an issue!

I liked the cave shots (just more interesting than others) and the last problem was great. I often think problems framed off centre work better - gives more context to the problem (and works well if overhanging and shot from side etc..). I didnt think it was over orange at all and nice to see new/different problems.

I prefer more talking than music (to me hearing the grunts/encouragement/piss-taking is more interesting than a tune..). But thats just me (and I tend to film/climb on my own in relative silence so.... :D )

Do YouTube vids not embed here now, or is it just me? Can't get it to work.

They should work, have you tried removing the http://www before the youtube address? that usually does the trick

Awesome dyno. Reminded me of Quent's except looks harder. haven't been to Cow's Mouth for nearly 22 years!  :o

Top crag. Great sunset views. The dyno's probably not as far as Quent's but the feet and the finish are all a bit slopey. Who knows about the grade. But it is a proper all out launch, with some exciting airtime for each failure. Great feeling sticking the hold - the kind of surprised glee I've not had for a long time.
