Massive nerd alert!

Terraria has just had a major patch released with tons of new content.

This game definitely won't appeal to everyone, but if you like your old school 2d platformers and also more than a touch of RPG/Adventure gaming it is worth a punt. Very similar to Minecraft in basic idea (except 2d), but with lots more baddies/treasure/fighting. Oddly addictive, for me anyway.

Nerd alert over!

Skyrim...

135 hours / level 58 / 300,000 gold (no stealing / farming / grinding at all) / 150 dungeons cleared / 3000-ish total kills

The awesome (in order):

+ Skies are stunning
+ Weather is varied and great
+ Controls are smooth and responsive (with FOV 90)
+ Blackreach, nuff said
+ Dwarven ruins in general
+ Unrelenting Forcing enemies off cliffs
+ Summoned Atronachs are cool and characterful
+ Some rather cool varied dungeons even if it doesn't seem that way at first
+ Dual wielding Legendary Ebony / Daedric weapons w/ dual enchanting 2 x health steal / 1 x fire damage / 1 x stamina steal and watching enemy just melt away
+ Random events that seem to happen in the world.
+ Nordic setting
+ General conviction of setting and NPCs with good variety in their attitudes
+ Mammoths and giants
+ Fast travel very useful

The suckage:

- Was very buggy before the LAA patch and still slows down sometimes
- Not enough variety in enemy and most are pretty generic
- Terrain is strictly previous-generation mediocre compared to skies and effects
- UI is very cumbersome and SLOW
- Very imbalanced early on with unkillable dungeon bosses at lower levels
- IMBA against close combat in general but too easy later on
- Easy to break quite a few quests
- Tiresome having to sell to 10+ different merchants after higher-level dungeons
- Too big really, should have made it a bit tighter and more varied

Uggggggggggggggh been ill / no climbing / no training / no social life / no life.

Haven't done the Dark Brotherhood shizzle yet, apart from the introductory one where you have to kill the orphanage owner, that was quite funny, little girl happily spouting "Killing one person seems to solve many problems", psycho wee shite. Not really that interested in sneaky thiefy stabby type quests...

I've been playing Dead Space on my phone. Pretty amazing to say it's a phone.

Hmm, need to finish playing that on the PS3, great atmosphere, but not very taken by the over-the-shoulder point-of-view.

Hadn't realised such games were available on Android though.

I liked DS Extraction, will give that a go. Probably ruin my eyes on the tiny screen.

I've only done the first 6 chapters but it works fine on the S2 and the controls are surprisingly easy to get on with on a phone screen. I don't know if this would be the same on a smaller screen.

Just completed the main quest in Skyrim and have done pretty much everything else except generic Radiant quests and the Stormcloak/Empire war thing cos I can't be fucked with that. Gonna call it a day until DLC comes out.

185 hours / level 64.9 / 600,000 gold (no stealing / farming / grinding at all) / 200 dungeons cleared / 4000-ish total kills

I Am Alive!

There's climbing in it!  Buildering!  A climbing shop with a climbing wall.  Placing pitons.  You run out of stamina, desperately try to cling on and then plummet to a grisly death just like real life.

An important question for any PS3 gamers out there . . . which game next?

The options are (in no particular order):

  • Fallout 3 or New Vegas
  • God of War 3
  • Heavy Rain
  • Batman: Arkham City
  • Skyrim
  • Mass Effect 3
  • Any other top recommendation
  • Weird PSN games (played Journey recently)

In general I am pretty open minded about games. I generally like a good story, shooting/fighting and puzzles. For example I loved Red Dead, Mass Effect 2, Uncharted 3, Batman: Arkham Asylum (just finished), GTA IV, Portal 2. On the flip side I though COD4:MW was really boring. Run here, shot that, repeat repeat repeat .  . . (even though it got bummed by critics), Assassin's Creed 2 was good for awhile but got boring and repetitive. I haven't played a real in depth RPG in awhile. I'm intrigued by the current crop but scared of the time commitment. Also I don't really like horror games.

Thanks for any pointers.

Dark Souls!!

It amazing and definitely the best game I've played in a long, long time (and I hate rpg's). The in-depth hit/block/dodge/parry & riposte fighting system is great and yes - it is a tough game but if you make it through the first couple of hours you'll be hooked. It'll all make sense when you realise that you can't button mash your way through every fight and patience wins the day (because pretty much any enemy can kill you in seconds). Mistakes are punished quickly and the fear of imminent death all the time gives the game a unique feel - the complete opposite to so many other games which make you feel like a badass killing machine all the time. This isn't a 'feell-good' game and not something you'd play to unwind but if you make it through, its a very rewarding experience. My game of the (last) year.

Cheers for the recommendation. I'd never heard of it, but just watched a couple of reviews. It looks very heavy! But also amazingly good.

I know it's a bit pointless asking because the series has so badly lost it's way but has anyone had a go with the new ghost recon?

After having no games console for 10 years I've had a very early mid life crisis and now own an X Box 360. I have the arcade version with no hard drive.

This leaves with no where to save DLC which is now all the rage. I was just wondering if anyone had used a USB stick to save these too and played games from them? The memory Nazi's at Microlog allow no more than a 16 gig stick. I was thinking of a USB 2.0. What do people reckon?

And how do I enter pokes for Double Dragon with no keyboard?

Good fun but you have to like the whole "Nintendo thing" in terms of software ATM
Speculation in the trade press that price will drop further so you might want to hold on a bit

Cheers Dolly, yeah I'm not really in any hurry. We don't use the old Wii a lot but think the kids will increasingly want to use it. I like the fact it's backwards compatible with the Wii games we have, also like the idea of Lovefilm streaming in HD, (current Wii only does SD)

Just played:

Dishonoured - very cool steampunk action/stealth FPS, good fun.

Still playing:

Skyrim Dragonborn DLC - more of the same but I am addicted.
Starcraft II - esports etc etc.
Space Marine - suitably done but really not captivating me.

Not yet playing:

Crysis 2
Crysis 3
Far Cry 3
Dead Space 3

Adding to the list of games I'll want to buy but not get round to playing:

Starcraft II Heart Of The Swarm
Bioshock Infinite
Tombraider reboot

Might get this. Meant to pick it up last year then forgot about it.

And definitely

Bioshock Infinite

...if it's anything as good as the first 2 games. Not so sure about Tombraider, might wait and grab a 2nd hand copy.
