Fairhead - guide lend wanted.
May 22, 2017, 12:05:03 pm

Got a week in NW ireland with the family at half term.  Hoping to maybe catch one day at Fairhead, if I'm lucky.

Anyone got a guide I might borrow/peruse.  Can offer beer.

Also any tips/recommendations.  Probably want to just tip up, do a couple of routes then depart.  How full on are the routes, are you talking all day expeditions a la Gogart, or can you easily get a couple of routes in in a day.

Do you need an ab rope?? If so, how long.

Any knowledge appreciated.   :)

For a quick hit The Prow is the most convenient option for knocking out a few great pitches in a day. 50m ab rope handy but you could easily enough just use your doubles - good block anchor on the slope above, bring long slings or a bit of spare tat. Alternatively you can walk down to the base of The Prow down a path a fair ways over to the the left (looking out). Selection of good quality VS - E3 (which ime aren't easy for the grades if you're unused to the style).

Other good options, no ab required, are the routes either side of the Ballycastle descent gully - easy scramble down to the base and loads to do from there.

Massive props to Cheque for dropping the guide round.

And cheers Pete for the tips.  Looking at the guide last night, The Prow looks bob on.  Fingers and toes crossed for some good weather and a following wind family politics wise.

The NW facing Prow, Rathlin Wall and Ballycastle descent east crags get the sun from mid-afternoon. There is enough daylight for a good day at the crag even if you arrive at 3pm. This might allow a family outing to the Game of Thrones location of the day in the morning, followed by daddy climbing in the afternoon/evening.
