NYMoors - Nearish Pickering
March 13, 2017, 07:46:40 pm
Up in Pickering on Friday with work, finishing about 4 which gives me a couple of decent daylight hours to get out - and miss the worst of the rush hour traffic getting back to Manc.

Cunningly I've left my NYMoors bouldering guide at someone's house and won't be able to get it before Friday so....

So I'm after recommendations for a venue - say within 30 min of Pickering with fairly short walk in - or closer places with a longer walk in... 6's and the odd low 7 to play on would be good. All assuming weather plays ball of course....

Cheers. tT

My initial thinkings are Thorgill or Duck Boulders.

Thorgill is about 25 mins from Pickering and about 10mins walk in. Limited in quantity but decent problems, nice vistas and a most importantly, a proper belters cafe in Rosedale Abbey called Graze on the Green. The best quality stuff there is basically on the two blocs in Andy's vid:

Duck Boulders are similar in distance but maybe a bit longer to walk in. Bit more variety and quantity there, more nice vistas but sadly no cafe. I've heard mixed report about this venue, but myself and everyone who I've been with enjoyed it. TTT provides some good 3D demonstrations is this vid:

The closest would probably be Ravenswick Quarry? The Moors answer to stoney middleton....

-10 to be precised.... I've had a couple of enjoyable sessions there, when all else would have been wet..... but felt somehow ashamed and dirty afterwards!

Have you been to Round Crag before Tom?  Upper limit of your time constraints but has some quality problems. (as in quality anywhere, not just in context of the moors). It's also a really nice spot and easy to find.  Pannierman boulder and some stuff at the other end (far left looking in) have some nice 6s.  Then between the two one of the best problems on the moors (upper limit of your grade constraint but quickly doable 7B+ if you like rockovers) , chasing rainbows: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yWtwj0ZlPjg/Tn-VXOSXnJI/AAAAAAAABPY/wjxXNIrCHEY/s1600/Picture+7.png

Thanks for all the help folks.

In the end it was a bit of a fuck up. I finished work at about 3 - so plenty of time - but it was spitting/raining (but very windy so drying fast). I nearly went home - but decided to chance it. Drove to Thorgill - walked in then couldn't find the crag. I misread the guide and turned right after the wooden bench not 150 yards after the wooden bench and ended up trotting up and down a hillside near a scraggly quarry with chossy blocks (that from a distance looked like they could be it..) - then returning to the guide - to the top of the hill to get signal and check google maps etc.. and repeat.

Gave up - then when 1/2 way back to the car looked back and figured out whre they probably were and the mistake I'd made...  guessing its more like here instead:
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/54%C2%B021'15.6%22N+0%C2%B054'15.7%22W/@54.3543386,-0.9054903,240m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d54.354337!4d-0.904361?hl=en

Grr... thanks for the help - was hard work schlepping about in a really strong wind - but would probably have been alright at the boulders..

Bump :)

Same thing but this year :) off in Pickering tomorrow.

Sadly the forecast is shite - so wondering how rainproof Ravenswick is?

The rock stays dry but if it’s really pissing down your mat starts to get wet. I don’t think there will any seepage as there hasn’t been a lot of heavy or sustained rain.
