Wild Country Touchdown Pad
February 23, 2017, 06:33:52 pm
Has anyone used this pad much? I'm considering getting two which I can keep in the back of the car more easily.

Would be interested in how the foam holds up and what it's like using smaller pads (I currently have a BD dropzone and Alpkit phud which I would replace).

It's more a convenience thing as I want to build a boot jump thing for my Berlingo and the smaller pads would fit within fit better than my current pads. Unfortunately living on a boat means everything needs to be kept in the car...

Have a touchdown as an extra pad although have not used a lot. Have used the big air more, guessing they will pan out similarly. Construction is okayish (repaired some weak stitching) but foam is excellent, rate it.

Cheers for the reply and glad to hear the foam is good.

Just wondering if you can squeeze a rucksack into it for walk ins?

Also do you think you would be okay using two of them for most bouldering you might do? Working out the square meter loss it seems fairly large. Two "normal" pads would be about 3 square meters of ground overage whilst these are only 0.9 square meters each.

I may be putting myself off here...

I've had one of these for about 4 years and really like it. Although a smaller pad it's still quite chunky, and the foam is good. But as it's quite small and hinged you'd struggle to fit a bag inside.
I normally only use it as a '2nd pad' with a DMM highball or similar sized pad as the main one. I'd rather have 1 normal large-ish pad than 2 of these
Hope that is of some help

^^ what Mark said. They do have a Velcro strip to join two together, but ideally they'd be a second pad.

Cheers both - looks like I'll be keeping mine and will have to find a way of making it work with some form of sleeping and storage arrangements.

How much time are you planning on spending in the Berlingo?

I was originally thinking about making a boot jump but having slept in it for a few nights, I'm leaning more and more towards keeping it simple and just taking the seats out and sleeping on pads and a sleeping mat. I think the reduction in storage space for pads with any kind of conversion is too much for me.

I'm only going to use mine for weekends and maybe a week away in exceptional circumstances and its usually going to be just me though so my needs are a bit different.

I'm not sure yet, but with my old berlingo size van I ended up using it a fair bit. Over the course of the 18 months I had it (though didn't really drive it for the last 6 for other reasons), my girlfriend and I spent 4 weeks of European trips in it and probably used it at least once every other weekend either on climbing/walking trips or so we could have a drink when visiting friends in awkward places.

I did think about taking the seats out occasionally but at 6' 1" I'm not sure if I'd be too tall. There's also the issue of where to put the seats... though I suppose that if we are away together then we can just chuck them on the sofa.

How easy is it to take the seats out?

I'm away in it this weekend so I might try and see how spacious it is.

Different trim levels have different seats. Mine has 3 individual seats that all come out easily. Others have seats that split 2:1, I don't know how easy they are to take out. I tested a Peugeot Partner before buying where it took me 20 minutes to get the seats out!

I take the seat out and put a rucksack in the footwell to make it flat and it gives me enough room to stretch out without my feet reaching the boot door. I'm 3" shorter than you though. Without taking the seat out, you might not have enough room to stretch out. Zora may have enough room with the seat on her side just folded forwards.

I keep the parcel shelf in for extra storage.

When I'm on my own I keep one rear seat in for somewhere to sit to eat dinner and watch TV.

This works well when on your own, not sure what the best setup is for two.
