Canon S120 available anywhere??
February 11, 2016, 01:06:48 pm
See topic title. After a new compact camera, I like the functionality of Canon compacts and was impressed by the quality of a friend's S100. However the S1xx range seems to have gone into a dead end: the S200 is weak on the video front and it's replacement G9X is pricier than what I'm after. Re-reading the S120 specs it sounds spot on BUT does anyone know if it's available anywhere at a reasonable price?? I've googled but everywhere seems to have jacked it up to an OOP rarity price of £300ish  >:(

i got one from ffordes with an underwarter housing for £250 last year. think its a case of waiting til a good one comes along. its a cracking little camera, was almost new and the housing was unused.

Cheers for the offer Chris, I've decided to leave the 2nd hands as it's a bit of a gamble / hassle.

Now I've started looking into S120 competitors and there are some decent options around but my head is starting to hurt. Currently thinking of the "slightly more than I wanted to pay" Nikon Coolpix P340 because it has interval timer mode (which I'm fond of) as well as all the usual bollox.

Just buy from Harrisons or similar with confidence.

I have an S100. It's a good carry-on-the-climb camera, giving noticeably better images than a phone but still pretty small and light. Handling is good given the size. Mine is now suffering from the shutter release issue described here. I don't think the S120 is similarly afflicted but checking with and buying from somewhere like Harrison's might be a good idea.

Which phone?

My S95 is still going strong despite the cracked screen (it got thrown at some Granite by accident). I think the quality of the photos I get out of it are no better than from Nat's iPhone 5C but I envisage that ending in an iFumble disaster at some point.

iPhone 5S. In excellent light the difference is smaller but in less ideal conditions I thought the camera was worthwhile.

The S100 is not as good as the Panasonic LX3 I had previously but the latter is a squeeze to get into a jeans or shirt pocket.

My IPhone 6s is definitely a step up photo wise from the 5s. I'd use it more than my LUMIX compact for video. The only reason I use my phone more for general photos is the fact it's always in my pocket. It will probably take a decent iPhone wide angle lense to completely drop the compact

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/cameras-camcorders/digital-cameras/compact-and-bridge-cameras/nikon-coolpix-p340-high-performance-compact-camera-black-22074711-pdt.html#srcid=11026 price is convincing me on this one. Not quite as good as the competitors (e.g. poor battery, I take spares anyway), but pretty decent and interval timer + good movie mode + decent zoom etc...

...

Fair enough. I went from the LX5 to an S95 which was the correct decision (the dial is brilliant). These days I always have my phone with me and the camera is getting left behind as just another thing to carry. Now if I could afford a Sony RX1 I might reconsider my weight vs. quality priorities.
