Eversion ankle sprain
January 22, 2016, 06:46:01 pm
Five weeks ago now I landed with the outside of my foot on a boulder and sprained my ankle on the inside.

I've had loads of sprains before (although all inversion/ on the outside) so didn't worry too much and did my normal rehab which is to keep it moving as much as possible plus some icing and massage. Normally they clear up in a week or two. However I'm a bit concerned as there is still a fair bit of pain, especially getting downstairs in the morning.

Anyone got any knowledge? Would an avulsion fracture show up on an X-ray?

I think if it's still giving you that much pain after 5 weeks, it's worth getting it looked at. X-rays will show up most fractures. The ligament at that side of the ankle is pretty strong and you often get fractures before it ruptures. Your GP is probably the best bet. A&E may say that a 5 week old injury isn't urgent enough for them to see you.

Is the walk in clinic at the Hallamshire still going? I remember you recommended it to me once for an ankle injury. Got seen, X-rayed and referred to a fracture clinic within about 20 minutes.

At the fracture clinic I avoided a cast and just got a 'don't fall off in future' lecture from the consultant.

Thanks Nyakon.

Yeah Chris, that was the plan. I'm just wondering if there's much point.

I'd go to minor injuries and talk them into x-raying it

this might then lead to someone booking you in for a scan

I don't know, depends what they see or don't see on the x-ray

CT scan if it's bone they want to examine, MRI for strings and soft tissue

based solely on my one experience

I had an x-ray at minor injuries, they looked at it and decided that my smashed bone (one big piece of talus not where it should be) couldn't be a new injury and sent me away to walk on it

a few days later, someone who knew a bit more about stuff reviewed the x-ray, phoned me up and booked me in for a CT scan - which revealed the true devastation (talus in a dozen pieces)
