I'm looking at getting a new bag for both going to uni and going bouldering (TCA/dumby). I'm conisdeign getting a shoulder style bag (you know, messenger bag to go with my fixie bike which I have made practical with waaay uncool mudguards and freehub)

Requirements are: Padded bit for a 15" laptop
Plenty space for books, grabbing some shopping from the tesco hippy trendy vegan shop.

And,

When it's empty of  all that stuff I want it to fit a pair or two of shoes, some snacks, water, jaccket etc. for bouldering.

Preferably tough, maybe weatherproof, not too expensive, not to flashy. Clean and simple.

Any thoughts?

I've a Howies courier bag that's been around the world a couple of times (distance wise) over the last 6 years and still going strong. Don't think they make them any more - and it was made for them by some cycling company or other.

Or go to Decathlog and get a cheap anonymous Eurobag...

I've got the one below.
I use it for work when I need to bring the laptop with me. I think I used it also for bouldering a few times before buying a Simond bag. This one would be good too but I don't think they make it anymore.

I've been using a Metolius Gym Bag for a while now. Plenty big enough(I can get my 80m rope to the crag in it). No padded section but could easily be adapted to fit piece of Karrimat(remember them?) to protect laptop.

Unless you're rocking a super thin Macbook Air type of thing, it doesn't look like you'll fit many books in there once to laptop is in. I'd second the Patagucci offerings, or suggest the TNF Messenger bags. I've had one as a day bag for about 4 years. It's looking a little worn, but reckon there's at least 4 more years before it disintegrates, plus the material is a PVC type affair so basically waterproof.

I have a tnf one, but the only bit that isn't pvc is the base which makes it crap for putting down on the ground outside

I think the DMM flights look good for carrying stuff + climbing stuff. Better than my Tesco-green bags anyhow.

Not sure yet. I hate having to take my bag off every time I need lock/unlock by my (6 or so times a day). None of my current bags have anything remotely laptop protecting, so I'll need to get something.

I think my gf left her shoulder bag here so I'll maybe give it a shot and see how I get on with it.

They make some gurt lush bags, though can be pretty costly - don't think they're necessarily over-priced mind you as tend to be top quality.

If I'm going top market it would probably be a chrome messenger bag.  The bag I have today is about 12l and is pretty tight with my usual stuff in, so it needs to be a bit bigger that the decathlon sized ones.  I'll check out crumpler though,  as I have a camera bag of theirs and it's pretty nice.

I'd take one! Just wandered into Evans bike shop and made a spur of the moment purchase of an osprey commuter bag. 20l, comfy,  plenty of bells and whistles (nice organising stuff that I usually eschew in my mountain gear). Time will tell how good an idea that was...

I was in Londiniumshire this weekend and went into not one but two TK Maxx and I'm now kicking myself for not buying a number of TNG garments and also Fischer Salopettes.
