North pennies
September 08, 2015, 02:07:54 pm
I'm going to be in the village of Gamblesby in Penrith for a week second week in October. Just wondering if there is any bouldering local I will be take one mat with me possibly two if can get them in the car. If anyone is game let me no as well I can meet them at crags.
Also what's the best guide book for bouldering around there.

Not much in the Pennies to your east, however plenty of stuff to your west.

Probably the most local goodish crag is Armathwaite, pretty cool little crag, nice little sandy beach and some fun bouldering. The further towards the lakes you go the more climbing you have, check out www.lakesbloc.com for info.

I guess you are not too far away from Goldsborough as well, which has good problems at all grades, that is in the Yorkshire grit guide, however, you can probably get most of your info off UKC and videos.

Carrock fell is pretty close towards Keswick. The Hoff near Appleby, if it's not banned at the mo.

Windmore End has been given the Varian treatment recently and has a new 7C. Details are on UKC. It's not far from Penrith down the A66.

I rate Windmore for short solos/highballs with good landings.
There are some sandstone crags nearby other than Armathwaite. Cowrake Quarry is very near Penrith but not very exciting, Scratchmere is a bit further away, not huge but a nice spot from what I remember. South of the A66 there is also some decent grit at Crag Willas.

I will be on my own unless I can meet someone or hook up with people up there so stuff easy but the odd difficult one to not to high would be good. I'll check these places out thanks

I'd be happy to go to Armathwaite again, or Carrock as others have suggested. Not too far from you in the grand scheme. If all else fails, Eden Rock is just up the M6!

CARROCK!!

IF the conditions are good and fresh go there. Top bouldering. Fine for the lone boulderer with a couple of small pads.

Grading....if it's a V3 face climb it will be utterly nails death razors and V4/5. If it's a V6 prow it will be steady to anyone who can compress a bit and V4/5.

Can confirm what the others have said. Scratchmere has very little but a couple of nice problems but you need a spotter ideally. Windmore has loads of nice highballs / solos but very little in the normal / lowball range. Armathwaite is a nice location if you like rivers, and is decent for power bouldering at the base of the crag, not really true blocs tho.

:goodidea: I'm trying to work on my roof work so wouldn't mind a roof problem to work on if you if any of these locations have one :)

Get on lakesbloc.com and download the Carrock guide... Spent three days there this week. It's a great spot lots of different style problems and dries fast. <20 min from the M6 Penrith turnoff.
