vacance en famille - ideas please
June 27, 2015, 10:05:38 pm
Got two weeks planned camping in France with the family over the summer.  Were originally thinking brittany, but the idea occured of heading down the alps side, maybe round grenoble, ecrin, briancon.

Kids are 7 and 9.  Climbing not really on the agenda, but know about the via-ferrata in grenoble up to the bastile, that would occupy one day, what about the rest.

Anyone hung out in that region with the kids before?  Is there loads to do?  We'd be taking bikes.  The kids aren't massive walkers or anything, so two weeks rambling wont set them on fire.

Any other ideas?  Grenoble is about as far south as we'd like to drive really, given that its just for 2 weeks.

Or should we just hit the beach in brittany again.

Yes Briancon a good option. We stayed in Valouise. Nice lake to swim in down the road. Via Ferratas, apparently. Bouldering. Walk up to Glacier Blanc. Loads of sport climbing if you can hook up with anyone

I've only been there climbing but always thought the Ardeche would be a good family location.. Lots of stuff to do - caves, rivers, canoes etc.. Certainly seemed to be lots of French families there... Further than Grenoble mind..

Ardeche is excellent for family holidays. There is a nice campsite at Mazet Plage, right next to the river and within walking distance of some routes. Lots of canoeing on the river too as TT says. Also if you want a bit of history, think some rock paintings near Vallon Pont d'Arc have been found or opened (or something), remember reading about it in the paper.

When over the summer? If you can avoid French holidays it's a help. as places like the Ardeche will be overrun. Having Scottish schools break up next week does have advantages!

I did wonder where you were on about!!

Cheers for the responses guys, Just booked ferries.

Reckon we'll head down briancon way.  Stop off for a snooze in an F1/ibis round Troyes/Dijon on the way down/back.

Ardeche is still a possibility.

Merci.

Just south of Dijon is the lovely little  town of Beaune. If anywhere is the wine capital of France, it's here. Cafes and wine tasting opportunities a-plenty. Cheap hotels on edge of town. I'd stop off here.

Not sure that will cut the mustard. Sorry.

There is a good crag at Remigny about 20 mins from Beaune for an evening potter too.

I know nothing about Briancon except that La Saume is fantastic and there are hundred of thousands of tourists in Briancon in August. Driving at daytime was a mess.

Might see you down there if it's the last two weeks of August. We'll be in Ailefroide

Just seen this. Off to Ailefroide at the start of August, worth a heads up if you weren't aware but it seems the road from Grenoble to Ailefroide is shut for the foreseeable future. More details here

Looks like an extra 2 hours or so to get round via Gap.

Had a lovely week at Camping du Letty on the south coast a few weeks back.

Brittany looks on the cards for us next summer. Any info on family campsites with good access to surfing and a bit of climbing would be good.

Just re-visited this page (usual late planning for us).

Chris - if you see this... and your still going, then Pors Peron is quite simply best campsite in the world!!.

http://www.campingporsperon.com/index.html

Great beach 3 mins walk from the campsite, good surfing at pointe du Raz.  Didn't climb, I cant remember if there was any around that immediate area.

On the cards for next summer, when the kids can cope with a longer drive from Scotland.

Opted for Lanzarote this year.
