Measure them thighs, deadliftin' mofos.
March 24, 2015, 04:54:08 pm
Right, all this chat of weights and seeing the size my legs are getting after a season of skiing and a couple (I mean a couple) of proper weights sessions I want a list of height, weight, quad circumference, deadlift max, squat max and .... current boulder level (worked) and sport level (RP).

I need strong legs because of my knee surgery and the fact I do a lot of skiing. but I don't want to bulk.

So, folks, hit me with your stats!   (non deadlifters are more than welcome, preferred even)

Do you want the circumference including clots (I've been told one of them is quite big)? Or just including the fat I can't shift off the thighs due to having 25% of my original leg fitness?

You're an outlier anyway Fiend!

Erm, probably best sticking metric. I'm sure you can all convert. I'll maybe get a google form setup. What a weird thread.

I reckon that little lot will royally screw up any attempts to plot a trend line!

  • Don't die with your music still inside you ;)
Height 177cm
Weight 73 kg
Thigh  53 cm
Boulder 7B

Figures are current.

I've taken thigh measurement where hamstrings are most prominent, near the top. Non-runners may have proportionally more developed quads.

Mr. Dawes legs are quite chunky, and I imagine there will be a few tricky slab problems he could walk up.

Also, I imagine the index of height/thigh is not linear. There are problems with this.

A little suggestion, if I may..

How about plotting height/thigh index against grade for each climber?

It would be interesting to see the relative impact of this. Personally, I've always thought there is a strong correlation between these figures, but in a general population the results won't reflect that. Or, how about one study each, for men/women?

Grades and lengths need to be strictly concurrent, too. ?

8A+ over 7c  seems a bit odd, and highlights some of the obvious problems with this study. Surely?

Powerband has always felt like 7C or 8a+ to me. If you're bouldering 8A+, I'm sure there will be a few 8b routes you could skank your way up.

leg circumference at its thickest : 0,52 m.
leg circumference just above the knee : 0,41 m

deadlift: probably around 50kg. At least one year since the last time i deadlifted...

To have a fighting chance of producing valid and reliable measurements of thigh circumference, the point along the femur at which the measurement is taken needs to be consistent and the muscles in similar length and tension.

A quick and dirty suggestion is to do the measurement in sitting with the hip and knee flexed at 90 degrees with the thigh muscles relaxed. Measure circumference at 20cm above the superior border of the patella (top edge of the kneecap).

H - 178cm
W - 80kg
Q - 60cm - top of thigh=Largest
D - 160kg
S - no idea on max, as I only do 1-legs squats in training.  I do 5 x +15kgs each leg though.
B - 8A+
S - 8b/+ ish.

I'm not surprised any of you knew your other stats,  but I'm impressed I managed to get a bunch of random blokes of the intranet to find a tape measure and measure there things! Any funny looks from spouses and partners? I'll need to get the tape measure out when I get home.  Currently about to crash in a snooze cube for a few hours in Dubai airport zzzzz

Never underestimate the willingness of the working man to distract himself from his gainful employment - I didn't measure my thighs for the sake of science but to stick it to da man!
