Not much confidence in your rear-wheel drive coping with the forecast snow and being able to get back then?

So did he or didn't he make it back? The road conditions were pretty treacherous on the way there (a few prangs visible.. including the usual blackspot at the bend of the hilltop running up from Calver crossroads) but on the way back things had thawed a little. Some of the driving on view was mental...some behaving as if there was no snow at all and others tailgaiting superclose behind those driving to the conditions.  On the subject of snow driving anyone else see this?:

It was well worth going: a really good talk from Steve, some positive stuff from the National Trust guy and the Stanage campsite news was important: bumbling committee folk in the peak park recently tried to get rid but lobbying (from BMC access workers and others) fortunately stopped that.

Judging by homoerotic top gun themed twitter conversations he made it back and it was quite entertaining...

I couldn't be bothered risking it in the snow. What were the Stanage headlines – just North Lees, or anything else?

The rest of the Stanage news was more positive, given the context of the overall difficult ongoing situation. Our access team are getting on with the park officers directly involved with Stanage and the Park seem to be responding to the feeling that any funds need to be ringfenced if they are serious about encouraging donations (rather than going into Park coffers). As ever, when re-inventing the wheel, B ark denizens can't work out what colour the new parking permit should be.

Some stuff is on the newsletter on the BMC community webgages as usual.

Apart from knocking back the North Lees Campsite closure there seems to be a lot of behind the scenes machinations engineered by Mary Baggeley with options mooted including a Trust being set up potentially with the backing of a bigwig Sheffield businessman presumably wanting to immortalise themselves. Henry points out that the Peak National Park was set up primarily for open air recreation and this set up would be against the spirit of National Parks and the fragmentation of the Peak Park into management groups compete for volunteers and money would be contrary to having a holistic strategy for the Park.

What a refreshing contrast to have the National Trust Eastern Moors Partnership Manager Ted Talbot talking about their active land management activities here (as well as on Kinder) thoughtfully balancing ecological and varied recreational usage. I gather the NT will be taking on Hounkirk area which with a boundary change includes Millstne Edge which is great news.

Meanwhile Peak Park authority/bureaucracy seem unable to move off first base with regard to finance let alone come up with a coherent land management plan. Apparently they have made an encouraging appointment  of Rebecca Newman as "Mrs Stanage" but she seems o be pulling her hair out already.
