Would it be best to buy a caving ladder (if so where from?) or buy loads of dowel and cord and make one? Also how far should the rungs be spaced?

Caving ladders have extremely thin rungs, and are very narrow so twist about a lot. Also, the rungs are fixed width so you can't change them as you get stronger. I would say don't bother.

Just get some static rope and either loads of wood doweling or strong plastic pipe.

Knot the rope in the appropriate places and slide the dowel/pipe on and you're in business.

P.S. be careful what knots you use. If you use the wrong type you'll never get em undone again (i.e. to alter rung spacing).

It has an answer to your question from my good self, that I can't be bothered to write again or link to, or what have you........
Hopefully sombody more greater skillz than myself has replied to it as well by now...
