Recommend a physio NW
December 17, 2014, 11:22:01 am
I've done something to my shoulder.

Tried ignoring it - got worse :(
Tried a sports physio - no success :(
Tried stopping climbing and training completely - got worse :wall: Arrghh!!

Recently been to see the GP - got referred for an MRI but there's a 2-3 month wait, they didn't have much else to offer in the way of diagnosis or advice.
Been to see a private physio who was pretty rubbish and suggested just stopping climbing if it hurts - duh!

Can anyone recommend a good physio somewhere in or around Merseyside? I live in St Helens and work in Helsby.

Been digging around on here and so far come up with

Alan Raw @ Harris & Ross
Matt Donnelly - no contact details but based somewhere in Merseyside?
Jo Gibson @ West Kirby Physiotherapy

Any personal recommendations much appreciated.

You could try the physio at the climbing hangar.  No personal experience however it should at least be climbing specific treatment and advice on offer.

Don't know if she's got any climbing specific expertise but I hear good things about Jane Ashbrook, with a practice at Forest Hills, Frodsham. She's worked with loads of my running mates, England orienteering team, Commonwealth and Olympics for netball and volleyball. She's a mate but I've not used her ...come to think of it I should sort this shoulder out really :)

If you mention Alan obviously you'll know his background and experience which is why I chose him after sustaining a shoulder separation, not a minor injury.

It got fixed. Expensive, but a lot cheaper than seeing lots of physios who can't fix you.

Thought about getting a private MRI? Was suggested to me after meeting a friend who's son is a semi pro tennis player.. Can be as little as £200 for a shoulder... It's a chunk of ££ but might be better than 2-3 months....

This is probably not what you want to hear,  but to me it sounds like you need to see a surgeon not a physio. If your GP has referred you for an MRI he must be pretty confident you have a tear. NHS GPs don't throw MRIs at everyone! Like someone said above, consider a private MRI - it's the same as 5 or so private physio sessions...

I was surprised I got refered for an MRI so quickly, the doc seemed a bit wet behind the ears. My appointment arrived today and it appears to have been downgraded to an ultrasound but moved forward to just after Xmas. I'll see what that turns up and take it from there.

Ultrasound can be just as useful as MR, it depends what you're looking for.
