Sharp pain!
November 08, 2014, 09:42:34 pm
I've got a sharp pain in my forearms and bicep (Right) and rotator calf, could this be a pinched nerve. I do physical work and it has become pretty much impossible to use this arm, feels like I loose all strength and sharp pains! Thanks Charlie.

See a doctor.

Or you could go round in circles looking up random advice on websites, forums and youtube videos, self-diagnose and do some random exercises in the vague hope they might work.

In most countries, the second option would often be the best. Presuming you're in the UK you live in a country where the last remnants of the once-upon-a-time socialist labour party haven't yet been crushed and thus the doctor is free, already financed by your taxes. So go see a doctor.

Would a chiropractor or a physio be better?

Although to be fair when I had neck problems my gp was useless and I asked specifically to see a physio.... So maybe try that

There's a provocative line in the excellent Rock Climbers Training Manual:
"taking a climbing injury to a doctor can be a lot like taking a faulty iPad to a plumber".

I think the inference that a doctor is too clumsy and not correctly qualified in a bit misguided. Apologies if this is not how it was meant. Your average doctor has a great many more seriously unwell patients and just can't prioritise sports injuries, rather than not caring or understanding.

Which is why it's still always best to find a physio who knows a bit about climbing and spend a few quid going to them instead.

I'll second Jasper's advice. Try asking about at your local wall first. You never know, there may be a physio that climbs there?

A couple of reasons I disagree with this.

1. It may or may not be a soft tissue problem. If it is, then it may still not be something a physio can deal with.
2. If you are offered a physio appointment by your GP (particularly likely if it is affecting your work), then there's a fair chance that they'll be able to work it out. Physio isn't a perfect science and any physio can get it wrong or right.

I've paid for physio myself more than once, and a couple of times were climbing related. It can be worth it. But the description of the problem in the original post was a) fairly serious and b) not necessarily something suitable for just a physio to deal with.

It's interfering with your work. I would see a GP.

The correct answer is GP. Especially if you're 20 as your username hints.

I'd take a sizeable wager at 2:1 that you'll end up at a physio's within a month of your GP appt. But still, GP first, especially as it's free!

As above.

Serious symptoms, cause unimportant. In terms of employment, you need to see a Dr, see who you like thereafter. If you don't and the symptoms worsen to be unfit for work you could be faced with difficulties in being deemed unfit for work and eligible for " signing off" if you don't attend a dr promptly at the start of the illness.

Go to go. Ask for a referral. If it affects your work, stops you sleeping then this should happen fairly quickly.

There are many things going to gp has over paying for physio. They can prescribe painkillers, anti-inflam, refer you to a shoulder specialist, access MRI xray etc to rule out other problems. At the end of the day it's also free, you having nothing to loose..

Go and see a GP, but try to find one with some experience of sports injuries or joint problems (some of us do!).
It could be a number of things there but if it's biceps pain and rotator cuff pain it might be a labral issue/SLAP lesion. Either skilled physio assessment or a scan might be needed.

Just my 2 cents worth on the Internet: go get it checked by someone face to face!
