Road Tax change headsup - Take note!
September 30, 2014, 09:07:59 pm
Just a headsup for anybody who hasn't seen the change in road tax effective as of tomorrow. I was surprised that 5 out of the 6 people I mentioned this to today had not come across it.

I dare say the police will set up some stations to pull people over about this to draw their attention. One would imagine there might be a grace period with this but one also would never hold one's breath with the laws of this land.

Check it here hombres.

outrageous!

half the joy of being a car driver is being able to display a pretty bit of paper that proves that you have greater rights to the roads than freeloading cyclists who pay nothing

There have been a great many temporary cameras set up all over Torquay in the last 24hrs.
A metal pole around 2mtrs high with a camera atop and a bright orange Pelican Case at the base.
We've been speculating on a connection.
If they are appearing elsewhere they maybe NPR?
If it's just local more likely some traffic flow survey.
Anyone seen similar?

My tax disc holder still has every tax disc the car has ever had in it, all ten of them. Pretty depressing to see how it's gone up!

I can't see why this would trigger a wave of police action. All that's happening is that you don't need to show your paper disc anywhere. The bill have been doing number plate recognition checks on tax/MOT for years.

very sensible changes, particularly the facility to pay by direct debit which will help many lower earners with cars in higher tax bands (our car is only £30 per year).

These changes are irrelevant in respect of ANPR and the police will continue to stop vehicles generally and this will make no difference in checking whether the vehicle is taxed.

Direct debit and the new owners having to apply are all good ideas (forces new owners to register)

But getting rid of the disc is bad. There is now no visual indicator a car shouldn't be there. Speaking as a resident of a road where I've reported 3 'dumped' cars in the last 5 years - the only way you could tell was an ever overdue tax disc. Rozzers weren't interested otherwise..

Some bell end on the TV said it would be like making tv licence payers display a disc. But that's bollocks, no one parks an old tv outside your house for 6 months. If they do it's easier to move!

Yes, but there's facility on the website to check if the car is taxed or not. Of course this assumes that people have access to the internet.

The only real change that I can see is this:

Quote
Buying a vehicle

From 1 October, when you buy a vehicle, the vehicle tax will no longer be transferred with the vehicle. You will need to get new vehicle tax before you can use the vehicle.

Other than that it is as you were...

The real change is that the gov now gets 1 month extra car tax for every 2nd hand car transaction as you have to tax from start of month but only get rebates for full months.. Sneaky.

Yes - if the previous owner cashed in - then new owner got new tax etc...

Whenever I've bought a car we've just transfered the tax and paid appropriately to avoid that, which is what you now can't do.

It'll just be factored into the price/haggling in a different way...

Anyway - as I pay £20 a year (low C emissions car) - meh ;)

Yeah, I just mean that the gov didn't get a sneaky extra month's worth out of the sale

Dealer told us about this when we picked up the new car otherwise I wouldn't have had a clue. All seems remarkably sensible.

Still is. Not in the least bit surprised and said yesterday this would happen. No doubt some civil service dummies have failed to preempt expected server traffic load.  ::)

If you think that's a bit shit, you should try using the National Crime Agency website to make money laundering / STA reports I could design a better website and yes it would be built out of string and require a fountain pen but at least it wouldn't be as shit as theirs
