Interestingly, the estate website is now saying that no more closures are planned for 2015. Pretty short season this year.

That time of year again, estate has noted that there will be no closures in August, and will post updates about September onwards.

They're normally quite good at responding to replies on Twitter. What day were you thinking of coming up?

Not sure yet. I have next week off work. Thought a visit to Crookrise could be fun.

I wonder if anyone could confirm the rules around dogs on Barden Moor?

Bolton abbey website suggests they aren’t allowed, the notice board where you enter says something about some rules which ended in 2010, and the gate next to the stile (at the end of the track from Embsay Reservoir) says to keep dogs under control (or something like that).

If they’re not allowed, can you get them to crookriss via an alternative route?

Our pup can only do 20 min walks but we’re trying to mix things up a little and visit new places close to Skipton where we can park close to off lead walking where he can explore bracken, heather etc would be great. Any recommendations would be welcomed.

Dogs aren't allowed on Barden Moor / Embsay Moor. You can find the details on the Natural England Open Access database:

Natural England

They are allowed around Embsay Reservoir and it's usually pretty busy with dog walkers there.

That said, I have taken mine up to Crookrise before although kept him on a short lead until we got to the crag. I didn't feel good about it after he chased some grouse when off the lead at the crag, so have left him at home since then.

Details for Barden Fell and Moor http://www.openaccess.naturalengland.org.uk/OasysStatic/ViewRestrictionDocumentServlet?CaseNumber=2019078929

If I remember correctly dogs are allowed on leads on the Bridleway which runs around the north side of the reservoir and then up to Embsay Crag and on down to Eastby, but not on any other footpaths or access land.

Crookrise is BMC owned, so if you’re happy to carry your dog up the hill, then they’re good to go once you’re over the wall!

Thanks for the details - much appreciated.

Are the footpaths up to crookrise not a public right of way?

I have to admit I don’t really know anything on access etc in this sense.

No Crookrise path is just on access land which starts when you cross the fence off the gravel track.

You can view all the OS maps with rights of way on Bing Maps on a desktop browser if you don’t have the OS map app or relevant sheet.

Right you are, thanks. No idea why but I’d always thought that the crookrise path was on the OS map. I think the sign I mentioned (keep dogs under control) is on the large gate next to the stile, which must be the start of the bridleway to Embsay Crag.

Thanks for the info. Good to get that cleared up so we don’t go upsetting anyone. Not that I can climb at the moment anyway - stupid wrist!

Barden related - does anyone know why the main crag at Rylstone has been surrounded with what look like some sort of cypress trees? They seem slightly out of place...
