Steel frame mtb suggestions.
September 01, 2014, 08:39:44 am
I was looking at getting a new mtb frame and wondered what people's experience/advice was as to the best steel model for trail riding.
I have been looking at old orange P7's on ebay but they don't come up that often.
Any help appreciated.

Being a lightweight XC newbie mincer I've only ever had alloy frames.

But I thought all UK mountain bikers were obliged to have (or have had) at least one of the following:

Cotic Soul
One-on 456 or Inbred
Ragley Blue Pig or Piglet

Saw this a few minutes ago as well: http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/fs-steel-853-hardtail-frame-saracen-kili-flyer-cromo

I have an On-One Inbred 29er. You’re welcome to borrow it if you’d like a ride on one….

Love it, far better ride than my old Genesis Altitude that it replaced. It is a budget Solaris effectively.

Cheers G.
I might take you up on that, fancy a blast in the peak one Saturday?  I was looking at the sirius r853 but the reviews are a bit sketchy. I have just come back from a transalp ride with the missus and a friend and after rattling around on my old orange gringo for a week I need a softer,  more forgiving frame.
The soul still looks the best bet but im open to any more suggestions.

I ran a mk2 Soul for a while. I still have but it's not built up at the moment. Great bike, handles really well. Looks the bomb in orange. The current model has a fatter seat tube so will take a reverb. You can also get one with 650b wheels now if that kind of thing is a thing.

Another vote for the Cotic Soul - must be orange though!

I'm almost as fast on the Soul as i am on a FS with 5" at both ends; whatever is lost on the downhills is gained going back up on the Soul.

I'd agree that having a dropper post would make the Soul even better, but it just wouldn't look the same without the orange paint work!

I've had an on-one 456 for a few years (until it was stolen a few month ago grrr). Loved it. So solid and great geometry. Maybe not as "springy" as some of the others though, according to reports.

My good lady has a Ragley M74 which seems even more solid/less springy, but that could just be heavy wheels and shit forks making it feel dead.

If you want a go on a classic On One Inbred 26 incher with canti brakes too you can borrow mine for a test ride too, they're much more compliant that the 456 (which I've also owned too in the past).

In fact I am seriously considering moving it on at a very reasonable price to make space for my Swift Rooster which will be arriving before the year is out....

Cheers for the advice people.
Im trawling through the single track forum looking for a bargain. Probably will aim for a second hand soul or a ragley blue pig. But then im also after a cyclocross hacker for my new commute to work.
Need a bigger house first. Or more money. Or a better job.

i had an on one 456 summer season and that was great. everyone who rode it commented on how well it took the down hills. think it had slightly slacker geo than the normal one. awesome fun bike and cheap as chips new so should be well priced second hand.
