Kilnsey: staying overnight
August 14, 2014, 06:39:59 pm
Hi all,

I'm planning, weather permitting, on doing a solid week or so climbing at Kilnsey at the start of September. I'll be based in Manchester then, and although it's not too far to go for the day, I'm considering staying over and making a trip of it. I have a few plans floating around in my head at the moment, and if anyone could provide me with some info I'd be very grateful.

a. Doss (e.g. tent behind the car), and go back to Manc for non-climbing days. I've had some beta suggested for this, but some UKB wisdom wouldn't go asmiss.

b. Camp. Are there any campsites nearby?

c. Some sort of youth hostel-y, bunkhouse-y option perhaps?

Thanks in advance. Seeya at the crag!

http://www.skirfarebridgebarn.co.uk/ just up the road. Never stayed there though. Might be busy (peak season)

tomtom, just checked out the website, and it looks like you have to book the whole place. As luxurious as that sounds, it's slightly outside my budget  :'(

If you keep a low profile (I.e no tent or take your tent down) then I don't think there's any problem dossing under the crag itself. Evening beer in the tennants too...

I bivvied at the crag recently and parked in the lay by next to the path... It can get midgey but other than that it was fine. Talked to a guy who worked at the pub and he said it would be fine to park overnight at the lay by but he said they get annoyed if you leave your car in the car park. The best part is you can hide some beers in the river!!

I think someone's selling a portaledge.

On a more serious note there's a campsite at Malham from memory.

If your half way up the crag in a second hand portaledge it would deffinetly be more difficult to retrieve you beer from the stream...

Ahh the joys of coming off a nig mountain crag and retrieving a couple of cold ones from a stream, even more pleasurable in the days before pubs (after lunch) didn't open before 7 pm (or was that just Sundays)

It just wouldn't feel right without the beer... Infact that's my 'Peice of ukb wisdom' take beer. Least the midges won't bother you too much then

We've stayed under the crag without a problem. Can have a coffee and shit in the morning at the trout farm.

Pub is pretty standard. I'd recommend making a visit to The Falcon, just up the road in Arncliff, for a proper pub!

Tennants Pub is good but the Falcon is the worst I have been into in Yorkshire.

That's the one. Ale served from a jug whilst surrounded by stuffed animals. At least the owners are friendly enough, unlike the Peak version - The Three Stags Head - which was just (is?) sh*t.

The Falcon has to be experienced just once, it is like stepping back in time! Best is watching the people who've booked to stay there parading down for dinner at 7.30 looking distinctly shell shocked!

If you don't mind a little bit of a drive there's a nice basic farm campsite in Litton just past Arncliffe and the Queens Arms there is a very good pub.

The falcon should be experienced once and only once. Don't know about the owners bring friendly - I received a ten minute slagging for "scraping my chair on the floor"

I've always found the landlord at the Three Stags Heads to be more than welcoming (as with big Sean before them) maybe it's because we're kindred spirits?

I was in the 3 stags head with Ben Heason and they wanted him to pay into a little box for using his mobile phone in there. Ben doesn't take any such nonsense lying down and a scuffle nearly ensued. We promptly left, bizarre!

That's not nonsense but a civilised request. People should be banned from using 'phones in pubs, fining customers is just a cop out, although the Marisco is perhaps excused as there aren't any other pubs on the island.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm sorry to break it to you but me drinking is a pretty rare occasion! At least I'm armed with the knowledge of where to have a post-send pint if something hard goes down!

If you're going super old-school, there's a hayloft (was, anyway) in the 17th century barn you see across the road as you emerge from the track from Malham Cove onto the road.
