Video Camera
June 09, 2014, 01:03:44 am
Looking for a good, reliable, yet reasonably cheap video camera to record some climbs so I have more than just memories!

What would you guys recommend? I don't know the first thing about video cameras so any help/information would be really appreciated.

Cheers  :2thumbsup:

I've been using a phone for recording for the last 2-3 years and find the quality is great. Most/all mid range (and some low) smartphones record at 1080p...

Tripods are cheap for them too...

My phone was free when I bought a sim card, does not have a camera or anything remotely useful other than it can ring and text. I dont think I will be buying a smart phone just for the video camera option. Iphones cost a bomb over the course of a contract !
Thanks for help though

Android based smartphones however are considerably cheaper, and you don't have to take out a contract.  See suggestions in the Mobile phone thread (also other threads in there) a MotoG + Pay As You Go SIM would be a good choice.

@Admin : Move thread to "Photography" sub-forum along with other video camera recommendation threads?

Slackers is right - you could spend £100-150 on a new phone and get a decent video camera to boot...?

I've mentioned it somewhere else, but the canon sx220 hs produces some great video

yes it's a point and shoot camera, but it gives you 1080p, exposure lock/control and reasonably wide lens with OK zoom - and it has reasonable stabilization for hand held

I shot this handheld on automatic everything with one (warning - contains no climbing), scroll through to see some low light shooting

available refurbed on ebay for not much (£80/90?)

oh, you can also dick about with the firmware

I should have said also that the sx230 hs is just as good for video, but also has geo-tagging or something

Yeah didn't really consider that ! What android phones are have ace cameras as well? The samsung galaxy ones? I did have one a while back but sat on it and vowed  to never splash out on a phone ever again !

Yeah spotted them on ebay, they seem tidy, something I could put a tripod on would be cool. It's hard to know what to spend really!

Thanks for help guys, never even thought of smartphone ha!

See the new phone thread - but the moto G's are £113 (cheapest on amazon) says it does HD vid.. suspect there would be a review of its camera somewhere online...

I picked up a Flip Mino HD a while back and use that for all my climbing films.

Mine's (I think) 1Gb and an hour's battery, which is normally more than enough for my purposes. I also bought a cheap tripod which is a massive help for framing shots a bit better than the patented UKB "camera in shoe" method.

They seem decent for the price, is the quality of recording decent? Yeah pretty sure an hour would be plenty for me also.

Judge for yourself!

West Chevin and Font 2013 probably the better of the bunch in terms of showing off the camera.
