Lens for Ceuse
March 09, 2014, 10:05:56 am
I'm supposed to be heading to Ceuse in Easter and I would like to take some photos while I am out there.

Can anyone recommend a medium range £<400 longish lens that might be suitable for the task?
I'm on a Canon 550d.

If anyone would be interested in a short term or permanent swap for a Tokina 11-16, or Sigma 10-20 then I would be interested in hearing about that too.

I take it you're meaning something in the short tele upwards range? Personally I'd get fed up carrying most of these up that hill repeatedly.

Canon 70-200 F/4  Non IS - great lens, relatively small/light, very sharp.
Sigma 100-300 F/4 - I was impressed by this, bigger but with more reach. I intended to buy it with a 1.4xTC but the model they had in was damaged.

Canon 85mm f/1.8 - I shouldn't have sold this, it was absolutely great.

or for something smaller
Sigma 50-150 f/2.8 (I think Johnny has one of these, relatively it's tiny).

I've said this to a few people now; join talkphotography and stick with it for 30 days and 30 posts (or whatever it may now be). It's a very cheap and reliable place to buy used gear.

Cheers Paul,

I'll look into those nownow.

I have a 70-300 lens but it is a bit shit, all my others are 50 and below.

Worth noting mine is the Mk 1. The Mk 2 added a load of bulk for some bizarre reason. I really rate mine (on a Nikon) but Cofe didn't get on with his Canon version.

Yer, I can also comfirm the cheap canon 70 - 300 mm f4- 5.6 is pretty rubbish. The 300mm end is so unsharp that its almost better to take picture at 200m then crop... I've read quite good review for the 55-250mm is and would be  really light too. Would really recommend a long telephoto for ceuse, can just walk along the crag so that the angle between the camera and the climber is less and just snap away for great easy photos.

I'm in the south east, but able to travel around to at least the peak area.
