DIY wooden rock rings
December 27, 2013, 09:46:20 pm
Has anyone tried making something like this? e.g. http://crusherholds.co.uk/crusher-orb-fingerboard

I'd buy one of the crusher holds version but I'm leaving the country in 2 weeks and don't want to risk not getting it in time. One thing I was wondering was do these things stay quite level when you're hanging on them? I don't want to spend time making one, only to find out that it tips off of it's horizontal axis when you're hanging on it, thus making the crimps into slopey ones!

Any design ideas would be appreciated. I was thinking of something like the orb, but with something to facilitate a sling attached to the bottom for taking weight off when necessary.

I can't see why something really simple shouldn't work.

I built a sort of scaled up version to use as a fingerboard and it works a treat. I think you'll get a bit of movement when you hang the holds, though it'll be worse on the biggest edges, especially if they're closest to where the anchor cord goes in.

Thanks for the image Remus. Perhaps if the holds were closer to the center line of the ply/wood there would be less tilting taking place. Maybe like the orb but with the slots going all the way through?

I'm going to hit B&Q today and buy some wood, hopefully I can work something out!

Adding a spacer block sort of thing would have the same effect, i think.

If possible Id try and avoid cutting slots in things. My experience is that it's hard to get a comfortable, consistent edge. If you're handy with a router it'd be doable though.

I know Paul, a wedge would be perfect (if a touch expensive for what I need), but probes is quoting 10th of Jan delivery dates and I may be gone by then. If he could post one out in the next day or so I'd buy one!

Where do you live? If anywhere near MCR/Stockport you could have mine and then send 'yours' to me when Mr Crusher is ready as I am not using them much at the moment.

If I had realised earlier I could have got them in the post today...

Message Shark, I'm sure he had a personal supply?

Thanks for the info Paul, I've messaged Shark to see if he's got any.

Sam, thank you for your offer, that's really kind of you. Do you mean Orb(s) or a Wedge? If shark doesn't get back to me soon then that could be an option. I'm not based near you but I could pay you for one (I'd only need one orb or wedge) plus delivery and packaging costs if you have time to post it?

The Wedge is a million times better but if you're short on time this homemade shizzle works.

Yeh it looks like a decent alternative Nible.

Out of interest, can you hand the edges one handed without it tipping to one side?

Silly question but is the Beastmaker alternative not an option for some reason? They do fettle some nice wooden things.

I have a 2k mounted in a friends garage but I'm guessing that it'll be a pain to try and mount on a tree branch or something. I double checked the website and they don't appear to make anything orb like unless I'm missing something!

I was hoping for something orb/wedge like that I could string up and start using quickly without having to worry about balancing lengths of slings etc. I probably won't need to use it very often anyway.

I assume you're asking rather than telling me that make one?

It prompted me to triple check and there seems to be something in the pipeline; http://www.pinterest.com/pin/219550550555284269/ no use to me now though.

I thought that was now in-production... Apologies if I assumed this incorrectly, might be worth dropping them an email?

Just received my Orb, thanks Paul.

Much more substantial than I was expecting for £15 and miles better than anything I could have knocked up. Very happy with it.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, this is my effort, its a bit like the wedge with the offset edges, but can be hung either way up, making it more compact while still having four sets of edges.

Cheers
John

anyone else jealous of CWP's setup?

Nice background - but I suspect he spent a long time on such a set up in the less glamorous setting of an oil platform!
