Dorset Camping recommendations?
July 21, 2013, 11:27:10 pm

Had a quick search and couldn't find anything before.

After recommendations for family camping spots around Dorest (Portland/Swanage).  Not really a climbing trip, but I'll be trying to sneek a few hours bouldering/DWS in if possible.

I've heard everyone mention "Toms Field" , however its now in the Cool Camping guide and thus most likely utterly ruined.

I've stayed at Acton Field Campsite. Next to Toms Field but still good.

All this talk of JC made me resurrect this thread

Heading to Portland this weekend, does anyone know of a no thrills farmers field style campsite? Less Gucci facilities and chance of summer hoardes the better!

Cheers

I've stayed at the Swallows Rest Campsite a couple of times, always been empty but that could be because it was in February/March.

Whilst its out the back of a farm its not that cheap at all really, its also very open and if the wind is coming in from the South/West it gets the full brunt of it.  On the plus side they do have lots of chickens and pigs in the garden that you're free to wander round, and its a short walk to a couple of pubs.

We ended up staying at Downshay Farm Campsite.

Not sure it fits your wishes though as its a bit family orientated.  Big fields though, so if it is quiet, you'd be able to find a corner away from everyone.

Slackers by any chance do you know if we can roll in and pitch late on, >11pm? Can't see it on their site

We booked in advance so they knew we would be turning up late but it wasn't a problem.

I've stayed here quite a few times: http://www.weymouthcamping.com/Camping.html

Always used to be ok with you turning up late and checking in in the morning, though I've not been for a while.
