Having had a 'one to avoid' earlier, let's have a Fish and Chip thread... such a fab thing, but so often shit... I'm trying to turn the rant lever off as I type... tonight's culprits will be revealed last....

So, kicking things off:

Village Fisheries, Sheffield Rd., Dronfield just a place I've been tempted into for a 'working from home treat' for me and the Mrs. - reasonable price for a good lot of chips, little fish and a lunchtime sized pot of peas/curry/gravy depending on how you were brought up... Quality wise - excellent. Not greasy, fish has proper crispy batter, chips are mega. The polystyrene pot contents are as per drills.... Still hot when home.

The Jolly Frier, Egerton Rd, Dronfield a tiny little place, must have been doing F&C for years.... But can still utterly fuck it up by cooking them in cold melted fat. Major disappointment, chips floppy and shit, everything dripping in grease that solidifies on every solid surface. Avoid.

Poseidon Fish Bar, Abbey Lane, S8 Awesome. Proper mega chips, gigantic fish, polystyrene pots as per drills but loads in them. Contender for my best F&C shop....

Admiral, High Street, Mosborough
Used to be my regular when I lived away from the yard - but well worth a mention. Everything that Poseidon had, but bigger portions, hotter food, friendly lovely staff, and some characters in the queue. The best fish and chip shop I've been to in a long while....

Greenhill Fisheries, School Lane, S8
Worst till last.... this place use to be Dixons, and they were one of the last bastions of fish and chippery, as far as my parents were concerned...
Well, whoever's taken it on is a money man, not a food man... As a 'first time in my life' I bought a bag of chips to go with the kids junk food Friday dinner treat, cos we'd run out of oven chips... Fuck me - first of all, I handed over a pound in exchange for what seemed like a pouch of tobacco.....

Brought home. Normally the kids don't eat all their chips anyway.. I might snaffle a couple out of the oven - nope, daren't in case there are too few... We end up with a 5 an a 9 year old saying 'these are shit chips, we're not eating this daddy' and as Grace pointed out, the little bits weren't even crispy...  Normally, me and the mrs are back from work, hungry and quite happily cane nuff leftover beans, chips, fish, whatever the bin lids have requested as their Friday nosh...

Tonight... limp, slightly undercooked chips, which tasted of old fat.... stale, frankly. And there's no way the chips got that brown but stayed so shit. I reckon they serve yesterdays crap... and basically don't give a fuck. Cunts.

The one in Ullapool is mighty fine.

The one in Aviemore just before the station is good, nice fishcakes.

My knowledge of reliable chippies in Scottish cities is somewhat lacking, although the general trend to do two small slices of fish instead of one big one is pretty pleasing. The best I've found in Glasgow is on the High Street, just up from the weird clocktower junction.

Anyway. I second underground on the nod to Poseidon on Abbey Lane.

We always used to go to the Phoenix Fish Bar (opposite The Big Tree) since moving to Woodseats. Always very good and better than Woodseats Fisheries across the road (which itself is far from shit, spoilt for choice).

However, my Mum suggested Poseidon once and we've been going there since. The portions really are ridiculous which makes it good value and the quality has always been exceptional.

The few times I've had a chippy tea in Sheff when over at Johhny Browns gaff, have always gone to the ranmoor friery which has been excellent. not been for a while tho

Huddersfield is appalling for chippies however if you are in holmfirth they have two great ones

Named after the last of the summer wine character.
Totally brilliant, great portion size. Maybe a little pricey

The one in the centre of holmfirth is great too bit cheaper but not quite as good as compos

Northumberland seems the most reliable area for chippies. The ones in Belford and Woller are both good.
I don't know the name of it but the one south of the town centre in Skipton is excellent and a good call post Kilnsey/Crookrise/Rylstone.  to Dobbin for that one.

Derbyshire Lane Fish Shop is usually excellent. Tasty fish with minimal grease.  You often have to queue.

I went to a cracking chipper in Brae on Shetland last Monday. It's frequently best in Scotland. They don't do delivery outside of Shetland though, shame.

For anyone popping to the Roaches wanting a chippy supper should head to George's on Burton street in Leek. Good through-put so food is always fresh, and pretty much open 'till sun down most days.

A subject very close to my heart! Must say that I always find Sheff chippies underwhelming, so will have to check out this Poseidon's tip, cheers for that. Other than that Tideswell one gets another vote, brilliant stuff. Also the one in Longnor is fantastic and well placed for the Roaches - Sheff return journey.

Mr Chips at Ovenden, nr Halifax does the best fish cakes I've tasted. Home made, excellent fish to potato ratio and well seasoned fish slice too. Blumming gorgeous. Good fish n chips too.

Proper old school for blokes in overalls. Always a queue, sometimes with Richard Hawley in it.
Despite the fine Woodseats offerings I think this is better. Only open at lunchtime though

But they are the only place (other than bits of rotherham) where you can get a proper south yorkshire fishcake.
