remove Dead Fit Birds thread? ... new poll
« on: March 04, 2013, 06:38:04 pm »
It's been about two and half years since we ran a poll and discussion on the DFBWGC thread. Only a small number of people are now posting on that thread regularly, so it seemed like a good idea to repeat the poll. We haven't specifically been criticised for it since then, but someone recently characterised the thread as "past its sell-by date" - which sounds about right. Please vote and comment.

It shouldn't be viewed as different to any other forum post, if it falls out of fashion it will be relegated to the depths of the forum and die there. Voting on the fate of it only succeeds in turning it into a bigger deal than it rationally is.

I can't believe you need to even ask the question. It is so unbelievably creepy and predatory. Don't you people have wives/girlfriends/daughters?

Just asked my 16 year old daughter to have a look. She phoned me back, was shocked that i was even on a site where this is acceptable.

A quick look indicates that on the past two pages there have been posts by 5 users, 4 of whom have contributed exactly one post each. Having checked back, some of the comments I made on previous threads are embarrassing and cringeworthy. I certainly wouldn't be saddened if it was binned but I wouldn't call for it either.

I could live without it.

Think it's a joke that was averagely funny to begin with that's getting less amusing as time goes by. A bit like Ricky Gervais.

i lost interest maybe 18 months ago, there seemed to be a move from contributors to quantity over a few really special images. I wouldn't really notice if it vanished.

I could live without it, especially as most of the photos are of lasses climbing indoors or at comps, which is bollocks at the best of times.

TSK, biased initial poll posting  :chair:

I think it's great and inspiring / sexy in usually equal measures. I can even tolerate the amount of indoor climbing as some of those chicks are busting serious moves. In fact some of the outdoor shots the rock quality / line can be a bit distracting....

Ideally it would be a sticky thread.

Keep the mnemonic but morph the thread into dead fat blokes who go climbing.

How about locking it annually? This would test how much the site users want a DFBWGC thread as a new incarnation would have to be started by an individual every year. As it stands it's easy for the thread to go on indefinitely even if folk aren't that fussed about it. Starting a new incarnation would require more intent.

Its a shame that the top post on the front page is not that excellent video of Mina on Careless... a great achievement and film that we should celebrate..

As for DFB..  for me its the comments not the pictures that (generally) can make the thread objectionable (and that includes my own comments in the past - for which I am serving a self imposed ban).  In recent months there have been few - if any comments. *shrugs*

Over the years I think it has wavered on a thin line between celebrating any women who climb, to a thread for creepy drooling over young flexible girls in tight clothes. In recent months too much of the latter and not enough of the former.

It's rather reminds me of this

interestingly enough, just watched this video on novelty addiction. Really worth watching, kinda gives a pro-male anti-DFBWGC slant to the debate

tl dr; looking at lots of pretty ladies (specifically lots) gives you erectile dysfunction, and makes you a bit weird.
