UKB Wiki and topos
January 10, 2013, 02:57:35 pm
I've just updated the Lancashire Topos page on the Wiki so there are links to (most) Lancashire topos.

I think the Venues section may be the best place to link topos, rather than having a seperate page for topos on the wiki.

Hopefully keeping everything in one place will make it easier to find.  Current topos linked (including various LakesBloc links) are:

Ashworth Moor
Blackstone Edge
Cadshaw Small Quarry
Clougha Pike
Craig y Longridge- Old guide
Craig y Longridge- Greg Chapman's newer quide
Cringlebarrow
Crag Stones
Dalton Crags
Denham Quarry
Fairy Steps
Farleton Knott
Harcles Hill
Healey Nab
Heysham Head
Holcombe Boulders
Hutton Roof Crag
Hyning Wood
Lower Montcliffe Quarry
Newbiggin Crag
Shuck's Lair
Stronstrey Bank Quarry
Thorn Crag selective
Trowbarrow
Trowbarrow's Red Wall eliminates
Warton Crag
Wilton Quarries
Windy Clough
Woodwell

As usual a big  :2thumbsup: to all those involved, esp Greg for his ongoing efforts.  And yes, I know that technically a couple of those sneak North of the border but hey.

I agree and already moved the content of the old "Topos" page to their respective Venue section and wrote the following on the front page...

Quote
For Topos (link purposefully removed) please see under Venues for the area of interest.

That said I'm not sure of the utility of linking every single Topo of Greg's from the Wiki.  For the Lake District I've simply added a link to Greg's Lakeblocs page, as anyone interested can follow that and then find the topo that they want. This will make it much easier to maintain in the future.  If for example the Greg's page changed domain or the directory structure of where they are hosted on the server changed you'd have to update every individual topo link, which is a bit of a ballache.  Its much easier to change a single link to his site though.

What do you think?

Props to yourself, Greg C and everyone else for making and sharing these topos.

Ah, I presumed it would have been you that had edited that.

I did think about that, and LakesBloc is linked anyway.  It's not a huge issue for Lancashire/ Lakes as I tend to keep up to date with topo changes anyway, so it can be updated as needed.

Besides, it's a longer list in order to keep R-man happy.

You can always check by looking at the "History" tab for each page.  I try and put comments in when making changes so that if someone thinks their write-ups have been defaced played around with they can see who did it and why.

Fair enough, I was just thinking of keeping it fairly clean and avoiding unnecessarily long lists (in addition to the maintenance issue if URLs changed) , but I can see how that might upset r-man.

Many of these free to end user sites, including my own, depend on sponsorship which in turn depends on people using and visiting the site.
Better to link to the sites themselves to drive traffic to them, this benefits everyone involved and ensures the sites keep running and the visitors might also find something else of interest there.

As a compromise, I'll change them to link to Greg's crag pages rather than the topos.  How's that?

I don't really mind, but schloosh makes a good point.

It'll keep the list long, but also send traffic to LakesBloc.  Everyone's a winner baby.

Done.
When I get a chance I'll bung some links up for the Yorkshire stuff too.
