Anyone had one? Be interested to hear anything about it from a climbing point of view. What you had done/did it go away/any long term effects?
Got one on index finger, first joint.  :(

apparantly if you whack it with a book or similar hard item it should disperse.
It hurts a bit though I believe...
I haven't heard of any long term affects from them

I've got one in the palm of my hand. Not really affected me too badly. Hurts a bit when I warm up on jugs and if I train 3 finger drags for a while. Went to see someone about it and they said it should just disappear of its own accord eventually.... You can always get it drained or cut out.

Cheers Nick. Hurts to really hard. Right on the joint. May leave it a bit longer, massage it a bit. Hope it goes away...

The urban legend regarding this traditionally involves using a Bible as the book, ...

A copy of Extreme Rock should do the trick.

Thats what I thought was in the palm of my hand until it obviously started looking like a contracture.

I had a ganglion after returning to training hard the instant my frame came off. It was pretty close to my wrist and fairly large. The doctor had great fun prodding it as he pronounced "I usually only see these on testicles". After a month it shrank by quite a lot and then went away. I did some reading at the time and found something suggesting heat helped so I applied a hot rice sock to it fairly often. This may or may not have anything to do with the improvement I saw.

Generally its best to just leave them alone (if it is actually a ganglion), it is possible to have surgery on them but they tend to just "refill" and come back, and as a climber its probably not worth the risk of tampering around with your hand. Have also heard of people dropping heavy objects on them, might work in theory, but probably would hurt a bit!

I know Keith massaged his quite a bit and it pretty much disappeared overnight.

No magic cure or words of wisdom for you unfortunately. I had one at the bottom of my index finger about three years ago. It lasted for around 6 weeks, and just seemed to disappear of it's own accord. It was occasionally painful, but didn't seem to get bigger or inhibit my climbing very much. I massaged it a bit occasionally but otherwise just tried to ignore it.

I think the ones usually referred to as 'bible cysts' are on the top of the wrist, and are a lot bigger. Whacking them with a heavy book was thought to get rid of them...I doubt that would be very effective for one on the underside of your hand, though :-)

I would think heat would help. I think the time it takes heal varies by person.

Not the Lancashire Guide? I guess that might cause permanent crushing damage.

A friend had one of the "bible" ones on the back of her hand, which disappeared after she whacked a volleyball hard and bent her hand back,

If you use a bible it needs to be the King James one apparently.

Got one of these on the side of my middle finger. Doesn't hurt; doc had a look at it and says it's harmless, most likely an after effect of some kind of minor tendon injury. Do they eventually go away?

They can, but not always.  If it ain't troublesome, leave it alone (assuming you're sure that's what it is).

Mine comes and goes (back of wrist). Generally it's not a problem, sometimes a little sore after undercutting. Only time it was annoyingly sore was when I massaged it quite hard. Seems to fare best when I leave it alone.

I had on right on the apex of my index finger PIP joint on the middle finger side. It did hurt to crimp, due to the pressure on the joint. I found that hard massaging immediately before climbing something helped quite a bit, but didn't do anything long term. I had it for several months and eventually just went away of its own accord.
