Make of it what you will.

You could pretty much do this thread with just Johnny Cash covers

agreed.

Perfectly topical cover, but I did think it a bit shit as a stand-alone. I love Cash though, he'd be doing the speaking clock and the shipping forecast if I had my way.

More interesting to see what he's got in [in error, of course!] that we rightly regard as unworthy, surely?

Some great covers, this is a subject I can go on forever on...

The great jazz pianist and composer Billy Taylor wrote the spiritual “I wish I knew (how it would feel to be free)” to his daughter sometime in the 1950s.

Dr. Taylor himself recorded the song for his mostly forgotten 1963 album “Right Here, Right Now”. Some time later he and Dick Dallas wrote lyrics to go with the piece, and Nina Simone recorded the song (with vocals) for her album “Silk & Soul” (1968). With lyrics the song became a part of the soundtrack for the American civil rights movement.

Everybody knows what a fantastic singer Nina Simone was, and I guess everyone has heard Nina Simone's album Silk & Soul, but sometimes we forget what an awe-inspiring pianist and improviser Dr. Simone was.

Simones studio recording:

Ever since you posted that, it's been a recurring earworm - the current one, still ongoing, since Thursday.
