Its worth repeating, watch Bitter Lake.

Got around to watching this, hoooooly shit, was basically terrified the whole time. Very interesting perspective, made me want to read more around the subject.

Channel 4.

really enjoyed this and what I took away from it was that in the process of fighting for equality through cultural and legislative change (which was very progressive), as a bi-product Trevor Phillips et al ended up producing dogma which said 'white people can't say anything negative about not-white people'. This ended up creating particular problems (e.g grooming of children by not-white people left unchallenged) as well as cultural problems: a lot of white people feel that they are marginalised and can't speak their minds. This last point is the wave of feeling which UKIP and similar groups are now riding on.

UKIP etc aren't a solution to these people's problems, and if they rise to power then they will undo all of the progressive work that the Trevor Phillips bridage did.

What worries me is that since the Blair regime when this particular government-led movement for equality began, we have been told what is racist and what is not (whether or not some of this was correct/wrong). Now, one of the main proponents of this movement is telling us that some of this stuff was wrong, and that things we were told previously are racist are not in fact racist.
So what is racist and what is not? People who have thought about racism have their own, perhaps good, answers to this question. But I think that many people have not thought about these issues for themselves, as they've just been told by the government movement what racism is... so these people are now left in a situation where they don't know what racism is any more, and may think it's ok/not realise it is not ok, to commit certain actions or say certain things which are in fact racist.

But I thought that it was a great documentary from someone who has not only thought about the issue conceptually, but has genuine practical experience of our country's social and cultural racial context!

Some are a bit patchy, but the well known ones are worth a rewatch.

Just watched Lost Gold in The Highlands, a documentary following a rather eccentric man from London in search of lost gold twenty years after a chance discovery of a mysterious wooden staff. A reflection on love, loss and mortality (and some impressive midge bites). Very good.

Yeah, thought that was good. Though of course it wasn't about the gold, was it? How could it have been?

I do wonder what goes on in Garnet's head. Cameras attached to balloons to find a wall? I found the thing in 5 minutes whilst sat on the couch:

I don't think the metal detector even came out. I feel a bit sorry for the people he brought along. If you want to go back and have a pilgrimage to the site of a "near death experience" then fair enough but don't spunk all that cash on a car, boat, etc!

Oh Jesus you posted a link to Bing. This is what tomtom meant about the "post Google generation" isn't it. Using a really shit search engine because it's cool and "edgy".

Exactly. That's the only reason I use bing. Free OS that's actually usable as opposed to the crap interface they give you on the os website. It did tell you something about the films protagonist that he rigged up this daft balloon mechanism when the wall is perfectly visible on the OS map!

Finally got round to watching Braquo this week after FD's recommendation ages ago. It's very good.

Only got one episode of the first series left actually as it's been difficult to put down.

Maybe it's just me, being slightly odd n'all ....

But I have really enjoyed "Survive that" on Discovery.

Not very highbrow, but entertaining to watch a bunch of survival instructors seriously challenged and laugh about it.

Basic premise:

Someone (a volunteer) is snatched unexpectedly and dumped somewhere in the world (Namibia, Alaska, South American Jungle etc), with a few (ridiculous and sarcastic) "Survival aids" and given 100 hours to reach civilisation.
Often with traps (false settlements etc) thrown in.

Am loving The Game as well. It's pure Le Carre!
