I got round to watching the latest Attenborough series over Xmas. I'm a sucker for this stuff anyway, but some of he footage in this one blew me away.

You can still catch the highlights here

The Sound of Song.

History of recorded music and it's influence on songwriting and popular culture. Another BBC4 winner.

Wolf Hall on BBC at 9pm tonight.  One of the best books I've read in the last decade and author Hillary Mantell has given the adaptation a big seal of approval.  Should be great.

You're the first person, other than the man booker judges, I've heard say that. I barely managed to finish!

I thought wolf hall was a fantastic book - enjoyed it more than most prize winners I've read actually. Little disappointed in the TV last night although my wife liked it.

Bitter Lake looks like another epic from Adam Curtis...

Haven't seen it yet, need to find some time to strap myself in for the ride and have quite a bit of salt to hand...

Agree it's top notch telly, and that "the book's better" type comments are meaningless... Erm, but... I read little historical fiction, but the books and Wolf Hall especially, feel to be almost a different genre. The Cromwell I saw in them was an exotic, polyglot figure, who'd learnt from levantine money lenders and thought of making a life in the east, when the east stretched away forever to unknown civilisations. Not many people in the world spoke English or had any reason to. Possibly this is coloured by knowing a bit about the author's background. Anyway, the books didn't feel rooted in English country houses...

Really enjoying Wolf Hall. Couldn't get past Mantel's impenetrable and pretentious writing style but the telly series is fantastic.

Makes you wonder what the real people were like. Mantel or Bolt's portrayal of Cromwell, More? Everyone seems to agree on what the Duke of Norfolk was like!

... and Smiley's People is kicking most modern TV serialisations  into a cocked hat.  No exposition, really long dialogue and scenes, superb acting.  It's remarkable.

I tried the other night. After ten minutes there were some gruesome taliban scenes and the wife asked what I was watching and whether it be over soon...

ditto to to the above, had to wait till quite late which actually intensified the experience. I then went on and found his earlier work 'It felt like a kiss' which i'd missed somehow, puts you in a haze of something or other

Agree on the Bitter Lake recommendations. Thought provoking if nothing else. My mum recommended it to me, which was a bit of a surprise given it's a bit different to her usual Downtonesque tastes.
Since watching I've listened to this quite alot:
