Here's another reply;

I prefer people just to yell instructions at me when bouldering, I use my laser pointer thingy for freaking out small mammals, usually cats.

Laser pen, eh? I hope you wash the dots off  afterwards.

Other gadgets you may like to try:

Electric toothbrush
Spray on chalk
Shoe Thermos

I can see why you're ignored on UKC - you ask a question that isnt a question and then get shirty 20 minutes later when noone has leapt in to discuss possibly the most banal topic I have ever read.

It hasnt been previously mentioned because noone cares.

Nah... these days I tend to use my virtual reality goggles which interact with a 3d geospatial data mesh in which every handhold and foothold is identified and marked with instructions like crimp or sidepull. Climbing is so much easier now compared when I had to have my friend point out where to put my hands and feet with his laser pointer.  It was worse in the old days before we had laser pointers and bouldering mats, my mate used to have one of those telescopic pen things which could only reach about 3 foot higher than him.   After that you were all on your own!

Shoe Thermos
Now that would be useful, no more cold toes, or having to stuff your shoes down your jumper to warm them up.  :)

I used to do this and have now gone retro (I kept leaving my VR goggles in the pub..).

Now I use a stick(tm) to tap repeatedly and patronisingly on the hold in question. In fact I believe you can get a North Face (tm) stick (tm) - if you want one and can't find one in the shops send me a cheque for £25.99 and I shall procure one for you. They come in red, orange, ash and pine - if space is an issue I understand there is now a Haglofs twig (tm).... which does a similar thing...

I think the clue is in the reference to UKC - he is quite obviously not used to climbing in any real sense of the word...

Could this be Gaskins in disguise?  Who else can pull on holds the size of a laser pointer?  :P

The trouble with laser pens is that they have tiny batteries and usually can't be left switched on - you have to keep your finger on the button.

What you need is a laser pointer that is designed to be left switched on for a while and also has its own tripod...

Christ, I hope he doesn't point that Death Star thing at Hank's Wall - enough holds have snapped off that already. What the fellow needs is a sensible laser pointer - a pen perhaps? I like a good laser pen me - good to use indoors too, as sometimes it can be difficult to distinguish between colours

...and just to clarify, it isn't me on a different login either.

no no no no, too easy, is it to much to ask for a Selachimorpha genus with a device that uses light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation to point at the holds.......no?
