My Mrs saw a kingfisher in Bingham park this week.

Boom, Wire Mill Dam? Been keeping my eyes peeled but none yet. #WMD

Think it was at the mill pond above shepherd wheel.

Joining our pet badger, we now seem to have adopted a fox too, although he/she is much warier than the badger.

Nice Tim!

Saw my first ever wild otter yesterday at RSPB Leighton Moss - proper made up! Kept popping it's head up through the ice and kind of lying on the ice before disappearing again and reappearing somewhere else - great show and great start to the year :)

Managed to miss three pairs of Bearded Tits by a matter of minutes which was a shame and still haven't managed to see a Waxwing yet...

Flock of Waxwing in a tree in meadowhall car park on Saturday (I know I know - on way up to leeds and needed to buy a couple of bottles of Fizz).  Made up for it though.

Kingfisher in Endcliffe Park this morning, disappearing fast down stream behind the cafe.

Good roost of Starlings up at Cavendish Mill, huge flocks gathering, but not much of a murmuration, just coming in, couple of quick swirls and straight down into the reeds. Perhaps too cold for a good display, but numbers are certainly high, get there about 3.45 on wards for about half an hour. Obv this will move forward as sunset gets later.

70+ Waxwings 50 yds from work in Sheffield S2 Thurs, ~30 even closer Fri AM. If you see what looks like a tight flock of Starlings take a closer look.

3 Ring-necked Parakeets overhead near Psalter Lane this morning, did a massive triple-wtf-take as I heard them first.

Ha! Unmistakable noise :) We've had a couple of breeding colonies in the 'Pool for 8 years now...

Feeling delighted this morning as I came a cross a Tawny Owl in the local park (urban - 1.4 miles from the town centre) on my way to work. It was dark but it's outline was clearly visible in a tree and it responded loudly to my bird app... Felt a bit guilty for using the app afterwards in case it was a lonely male trying to hoot up a female and I had given him false hope...  :-[

Barn owl hunting in daylight hours at Roundhill the other week. Saw one after dark whilst parked up at the filling station at Pool (in Wharfedale) Bridge just before the festive break. It was flying round in circles for ages in the field by the river there. Fantastic looking blunt faced creatures.

I live in the area and I frequently hear owls in the street at night, have only spotted it once though.

Whats this app called?

@bigironhorse it used to be the RSPB bird app but latest update seems to have down as "e guide to birds" - it cost a fiver but it's been super helpful over the years and I wouldn't be with out it!

Do you live in my area?

Sorry having re-read your post properly it seems likely that I assumed you were talking about endcliffe park in Sheffield. But maybe not.

Fishing on Sunday in Cheshire, I'm 90% certain that I heard some Waxwings (they're pretty distinctive right?) so downed rods and rushed off into the bushes but failed to locate them :(

Highlight of the day (aside from the 9 trout I caught of course) was seeing a what I think was a Hobby dashing in and out of a line of bushes at the far end of the fishery. It landed on a post but scarpered as soon as I made steps to get a better view. It's wing shape was like a swift but bigger - sound about right?

Also went to Hoylake on the Wirral for what turned out to be not a very high tide to watch waders on Saturday. Loads of Oystercatchers and Shelduck but disappointingly only small numbers of Knot which was the main reason we went. I did manage some excellent views of a group of Purple Sandpiper at New Brighton later on in the day which was nice!

U.K. population of hobby migrate to Africa in winter. Possibly Merlin? Wish I knew how to quote function properly as above in response to fatneck.

Woke around midnight last night to the sound of birdsong outside the window. It persisted for a while till I drifted off back to sleep.
I'm no good at identifying birds from their call but I suspect a black bird or some such.

It was noticeably milder last night and yesterday had a touch of spring in the air.. but midnight!?!  Is that unusual??
