Oh that reminds me, I saw a buzzard from my office chair the other day. Went upstairs to get a better look, couldn't see the buzzard but a Peregrine appeared and watched it do a full lap of S10. Also saw a ringtail harrier on the edge of Sheffield last week.

Enormous flock of starlings now roosting in the trees in the school near our house, probably a hundred at least. Didn't do a full murmuration but quite an impressive display of flying before they roosted, maybe the numbers will grow.

Good time of hear to check out murmurations btw, there's a facebook page with a list of possible sites, Brighton, Blackpool and Somerset seem to come up a lot.

I may have underestimated numbers;

Murmurations are mesmirising, quite incredible coordination - I've yet to see a starling turn the wrong way and bump into the guy next to him!

Our badger has been coming every night now, so I have had the chance to get some better pictures. We think that it is a female, but apparently its very difficult to tell (unless you are another badger I hope...).

Saw a truly magnificent Great Blue Heron on a walk this morning, sat calmly on a dead tree trunk beside a semi-urban river. In scale a completely different beast to any heron I've seen in Britain.

Reporting rates this year are four or five times the average! Heard one the other day but I've not seen any yet this year!

How does it stack up to one these height wise;

They are bastard big birds, look like something crossed between Pixar and Prehistoric.

Spotted some huge black geese (?) in Weston park the other day. Anyone know what they are? Couldn't seem to recognise them from the internet/book.

Its head was down on its shoulders but even so it looked to be 3 ft + (as a very rough guesstimate). Googling suggests the Shoebill tends to be a little taller.

Could they have been black swans?

Possibly but the neck didn't look long enough from where I was sitting. Will take a picture today.

Went for a closer look at lunch today. I think they are actually cayuga ducks which apparently is a domestic strain of mallard. There were some others which seemed like some kind of hybrid as well.

Just got back from St Lucia, with my main aim being to see and photograph hummingbirds. Bugger me it was hard - they are incredibly quick, very unpredictable and tiny. And rather lovely.

I managed to get a few in focus (and many, many not in focus).

On a rather more local level, a mega rare Dusky Thrush seems to be hanging around in Beeley village near Chatsworth at the moment. Only the 11th sighting ever in the UK.

I did get some poor record shots, but it was quite tricky with about 200 odd other bird geeks in the way. I'm not sure Beeley knew what hit it.

4 or 5 parakeets on the site of the old Bannerdale Center this morning - the most I've seen at once in Sheffield

Jealous!! Not seen one for years but apparently, this is a good year for them so fingers crossed!

Spent a couple of hours at RSPB Conwy at the weekend and managed two new species in several Goldeneyes and a Water Rail. Also saw the first starling murmurations, only small so far (20-70 birds) but still a boss spectacle and can't wait till they begin in earnest...

A filtered to death Instahelm shot for you...

And an un-edited sunset...

Our murmuration seems to have disappeared.
