Knee shot from heel hooking
December 05, 2008, 12:28:32 pm
Alright, just got my elbow better after a month off, been 'taking it easy' at The Works and then came up against the new blue circuit and injured my knee  :furious:

I did pull something in my knee a while back doing exactly the same thing - steep or roof-y heel hooking with right leg. I went to The Clinic and got some advice from John and it went away without too much drama (or so I thought) - however now I'm worried I might have opened up a weakness / not healed properly from last time.

The pain's in the back of the knee, it's not any of the tendons / ligaments that run down the sides, it's right inside at the back, at the top of the calf.

I'll be icing / avoiding heelhooks and stuff over the next month or so, hope that'll work.

Just wondering if anyone's had a bit of this themselves (I seem to remember Cofe posting a while back?) - did it ever go away totally? I petrified I've done something to my cruciate, hoping it's not that.

I've had the same recently, pain behind the knee when pulling on a heel. I avoided doing it for a few weeks and it calmed down and then I did a foot lock and something went ping making it hurt again. I'm just avoiding pulling hard on it and it is getting better slowly. I know a few people atm with this problem.  :-\

Don't worry about the cruciates.
Sounds more like a gastroc strain.

I've got this problem in my right knee which I figured was from singlespeeding, but now 2 other mates have the same issue. Right knee pains and tendinitis in left elbow. I think it may be the works circuits causing it, as its not something any of us have suffered from before.
Anyone else got it so bad they cant load bear 1 leg past 90 degrees without falling in a heap and crying??
Oddly though it doesn't stop me running or riding just standard things like getting out of cars.  :(

mine was more on the outside of the knee, although it could be pretty uncomfortable at the back too. i did it heelhooking with the foot rotated out, i.e. pulling in with the heel. the guy i saw reckoned it was hamstring related and he did some work on it and i did some exercises. it's settled down now (I did it late April) although i won't try certain moves - that may be more of a mental rather than physical issue. it did stop me climbing most of the summer, although i had the MTB to keep me occupied.

the thing to do is go see someone i reckon.

Good advice, that.

Yep, that's it - can run 5 miles no problems, but can't sit cross legged (i.e. with right ankle resting on left knee) and any load bearing on right heel brings serious pain.

I wouldn't be so annoyed, but when I looked at the problem I thought "better take it easy here, not sure about heelhooks like that...ahh blow it, it'll be fine - that was ages ago..."

Agree in the 'get it seen to' advice - at this rate I'll be paying half of my salary to try and fix all the broken bits of me.  :'(

Hi all, Sorry to bump such a old topic but its seems to be the only relevent knee injury thread.

Basically I am struggling with exactly as what is described below. It is pretty much OK day to day, even climbing as long as I am not pulling back on the leg.

Heel hooks and body tension moves cause pain. It is worse with the toe pointing outwards. Again cross legged is a no go (with right ankle on left knee and sat on the floor with one crossed over the other) both lead to a nasty unhealthy snapping noise.

Have any of you managed to sort the problem out, I have been to see a osteopath and a physio about it and neither of them have been sure. After lots of reading on line I am starting to think it may be a popliteus injury http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/sport-injuries/knee-pain/popliteus-injury

If anyone can recommend a specialist that they have had any luck with that would be great. (I am based in Derby but happy to travel a hour or so each way)

I will just add I can't think of a specific thing why started it off. It seems to have got worse and worse gradually and as usual I didn't stop climbing on it until to late. Its been going on for a couple of months now, and I have been icing it regularly

funny i have more or less the same since trying a bad heel hook move a couple of weeks ago.

i've experienced a similar discomfort other times (just apparently not from heel hooks?) and it slowly healed by itself. (slowly=couple of months...)

No recipe apart from avoiding painful moves for a while, i'm sorry...

I have been avoiding all aggravating moves for about 2 months, and hardly any climbing for the past month and it is showing no signs of improvement.

Have you been to see anyone or are you just waiting it out?

Hi Drew, weird coincidence...I've just tweaked mine again!

If you're Derby based why not make a trip to The Works on one of the nights John from The Clinic is there? (Thursdays IIRC?)

I'd certainly recommend him having seen him before, plus you could have a non heel hooking training session. Though knowing Percy's setting good luck with that!

 ;)

Agreed. Tommy, if you have 'done' a cruciate, you would be very unlikely to be in much doubt about whether to go and see someone about it in the very near future!
As others have said, go see someone about it really. You could try a series of stretches of posterior leg muscles hamstrings, gastroc, soleus and ease off if they hurt in any way that you would not expect a stretch to hurt.

Drew, sounds just like my popliteus injury, although I did mine skiing. Physio I saw said it was very common and easily repeatable, and he treated numerous skiers for it. Mine cleared up with rest and and some pretty intense massage,  but seems prone to playing up now, sorry not that useful....good luck with it

Runt are you Sheffield based? If so what physio did you see?

Otherwise I will book a appointment with the clinic/works physio.

I am 90% sure it is what I have done and yet neither of the 2 people I have seen have suggested that.

Most muscular injuries of the thigh and calf clear up pretty quickly with rest and then progressive return to activity / loading, sometimes with more specific advice from a physio or similar on stretching etc.... apart from more acute or chronic tendinopathy. Posterior knee pain that wont clear up and is recurrently irritable with twisting / pulling stressess may implicate the cartilage / posterior horn of the meniscus or a similar internal joint injury e.g. partial cruciate injury etc particularly if then mechanism of injury was a twisting / pulling or compressive / rotational force. Rather than spend loads of money on physios and osteopaths if it's not better after 12 weeks post injury and you've tried rest and progressive rehab with physio or similar, then a trip to the GP to request an MRI knee could be worthwhile.

hi just seen this has been resurrected. My knee got progressively worse from climbing and running so, like cofe I started mountain biking more, until i fell off and tore my rotator cuff.
that injury stopped most exercises, but over the last 6 months I've got back into climbing, and running a bit and both the shoulder and right knee have been fine.
unfortunately my left knee seems to now have the same symptoms as my right previously had, which stopped the running and a physio friend gave me some stretching exercises and a foam roller to use to loosen everything up which seem to be helping.
definitely worth seeking expert help and avoiding anything causing pain.

I get it badly about once a year. It's so frequent for me that many of my friends call it 'scouse knee'.
Advice is just to avoid tweaking it as much as possible. I love the circuits at the works but they are SO heel dependent so try to pick problems wisely and don't do what I do and get carried away indoors - it's only training after all.
Oh yeah - it does always clear up on it's own but I've found recovery can be aided by trying to strengthen the antagonist on the top of the thigh (leg raises at the gym etc) as I'm sure my problems are caused by muscle imbalance in my weedy legs.

Drew, afraid I'm nowhere near Sheffield, the bod I saw was while I was in Canada, might be worth trying to track down someone nearby that has served time near the mountains, or in a meat grinder for knees like BC, and appreciates what you do to yourself in the name of enjoyment! Hope it clears up.

To resurrect an old thread ... my left knee went a couple of weeks ago at the wall, as I pulled on a not especially strenuous heel hook. Hasn't really improved since, thought it might, and I don't have loads of time to try and see someone in next two weeks. Thinks a hamstring, as it's above the knee, slightly on the inside of centre. Leg was probably at 90deg ish when it went. Any top tips? I've a feeling it's written off a couple of the handful of problems I was keen to really try before the winter is out. :-(

Ez cofe. I had pain in the same area recently from falling hands first out of a heel-hook problem, then driving 2.5 hours home and stiffening up like fuck. Found it really sore to raise my lower leg behind me, but most other movements (including strenuous leg presses) were fine. Went to see a physio after a week of only slow progress, he did a load of movement tests, confirmed the pain-causing movement was due to a damaged ham-string & tendon. He did some painful massage, and recommended another week of rest, light stretching, and keeping it moving and active in general. I did that (well not much stretching) and it's definitely improved - still a bit weak on heel hooks, but I've started doing some hamstring curls or whatever the fuck they are called down the gym, and it's not been much of an issue from a month post-incident onwards. HTH
