November 26, 2008, 11:27:08 pm
ok so pulling on sunday and i strain my arm slightly, still keep climbing as it just feels tired.

checked it today to discover its got a kind of groove in it, vertical pencil wide.
im in no massive pain it just feels stiff and i feel it in my shoulder too

ill show you a picture of my right bicep, then a few of the offending bicep in question.

so RIGHT, perfectly fine bicep:

and now left, with the pain:

Nope.
But it's a partial tear of the muscle belly.  Treat as usual:  RICE.
Good luck.

Don't worry, it's just a sign of getting old.

Give it 2 weeks and see.  If it's still sore give it a little longer.  Gentle, passive stretching would be useful (but NOT in the acute, painful phase).

my friend eric had the same from 46 consecutive tries of the undercling move of magic bus in font, only his tear was massive, like a big, strangely shaped hole in the muscle.
in a few weeks of absolute rest he was more or less fine again.

Sounds like good news for me then, any tips on how to avoid accidentally straining it again (immobilisation/strapping etc...)

Rest it.Also it might be worth seeing a physio. When I did mine I managed to do a bit of deadhanging and did the rehab weights the physio gave me.Once it stopped hurting I started climbing again.

starting to worry about my arm now, a lot of bruising has spread down my forearm and on my elbow.
I can function alright with it as long as I don't lift anything slightly heavy or push thing to the side.
After thinking its been getting better it now seems to be getting slightly worse. Think I might of strained some ligaments/ tendons as well.
I'm presuming that even if this is the case there is nothing more to do apart from resting, icing and ibuprofen and was thinking of doing some light stretching work with a theraband?

You're East Manchester, right? I'd recommend Alan Raw at harris and ross based off Deansgate. Jeff Ross practises at Total Fitness Wilmslow on A34 he's probably a good bet too. My experience is good advice works out cheaper in the long run. Check out the profiles to see the pedigree these guys have got: they really know what they're talking about.
Good luck.

jim the bruising will spread, its gravity.
stop doing bloody pull ups on it!
a physio will be able to tell you what they think is going on (better than most doctors I might add) but unless they do an MRI scan then they will not be able to tell you for certain what is wrong. you don't need an MRI scan, but i would see a physio and DO the rehab exercises they suggest. as far as i can ascertain unless its the acute stage you should be mobilising it
and start warming up, you're not 15 anymore

(COI- this is not your heart and i could be completely wrong!)

I only did one pull up to see if i could, think I was mostly pulling with my other arm anyway.
With regards to physio, I've only just got an appointment for my neck problems that I applied for last year so looks like I'll have to pay for it if I want it this side of 2011.
Going to the doctors and the hospital was a complete waste of time anyway

Fairly sure its my brachialis thats torn and not my bicep now. thats why a pull up was easy as long as I don't go near straight arming.
Am I right in thinking that the brachialis is only really used in the initial bending of the elbow from striaght arm and then he bicep takes over after that?
There is a lump that moves about where the brachialis is supposed to be. Looks like I might have to fork out some cash for this one

Biceps are mostly involved with supination.

dont know what that means, but I'm now more or less convinced that my brachialis is fucked and possibly needs re atatching. What is my best way to go about this, go back to the docs and insist on being refered? from what i've read if it does need re attatching, it needs to be done fairly soon

That sounds shit Jim, hope you get it sorted.
On the bright side at least its not the Brachioradialis: "A muscle of the forearm that acts to flex the forearm at the elbow. It is also capable of both pronation and supination, depending on the position of the forearm; for this reason it is also called "the beer drinker muscle."

I would go to the doc's as you've nothing to lose. I would however be beating a path to harris and ross - did you look at the link I posted and the level of experience physios like Jeff Ross and Alan Raw have?

yes I had a look thanks, not particulary got loads of cash at the moment tho.
might give them an email and see what they think, really need a diagnosism rather than physio to begin with.
it really weird, i can more or less tense the bicep at 90 degrees so it fairly solid but it just lolops around ontop of the arm. when i try to tense it with arm fully bent it just twitches.

I can't quite picture that but it sounds like something's torn. I'm no physio but tears in the muscle may not give you the problems tendons do even if they look really dramatic. You could always ring up the Wilmslow office and see if you could have a chat with Jeff Ross without committing cash. I bet if you trawl enough body-building sites eg you'll find a description of exactly the same injury somewhere.

If you get referred for an ultrasound scan the waiting list is much shorter. If the sonographer can't see anything I think they'd refer for a CT scan. A GP is more likely to refer for an ultrasound as it's much cheaper than other scans and the GP would also be forced to refer onwards if anything shows up. I'd google it on the internet and go armed to the GP with some info and go in asking for a scan.

Cheers Ru, pretty much what I was going to do although I didn't know about waiting times for different scans so thanks for that

quick update:
been back to doctors today and raised my concerns, he agreed that something definitely is not right and has referred me to orthopedics at one of these mobile clinic units next Thursday so I'm pretty happy that I will be seeing someone who will be able to diagnose and give me the correct treatment in a reasonable amount of time.
Fingers crossed its not too bad

Have to say it looked as if a tendon or insert was  ripped and the bicep was being dragged up your arm. Something like this?

http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=a00376

Hope you get it sorted cos it looked gnarly
